Safety inspections for cars pass Senate vote in 19 19

In Austin on April 18 the Senate approved a bill requiring annual safety inspections for all cars, covering lights, brakes, wipers and more with a $1 fee. It heads back to the House for concurrence in amendments, amid opposition from Sens. Ashley and McDonald and support from Sen. Bell who cites traffic law uniformity and life concerns. An inspector in each of Texas 254 counties is required by the latest amendment.

Arrest Two Men in Childress Burglary

Amarillo man Charles Potter Jr. and Phoenix, Ariz., dealer Winifred Pearson were arrested on a Sunday night United Super Market burglary in Childress. Ranger Frank Probst nabbed them as they left East Tenth Avenue driving a car linked to Amarillo dealers. A third suspect is sought. Potter faces additional charges for a Montgomery Ward burglary earlier.

Dalhart shooting deaths and defense draft cuts reported

Dalhart reports the fatal shotgun shooting of William Frank Davenport a 53 year old farmer at his home. His daughter Anna Lou Davenport 18 is recovering at Dalhart Hospital and has given a statement. Other family members were involved in prior legal actions. Separate from the homicide, Washington notes Assistant Secretary Anna Rosenberg says the Army will begin releasing enlisted reservists by September and trims May draft calls from 60 000 to 40 000 due to rising volunteer enlistments and lower casualties. The Marine Corps Navy and Air Force plan similar releases into mid 1952 and next July respectively.

British Submarine Affray Search Goes On In Channel Tragedy

Faint underwater signals spurred a blind search for the British submarine Affray stuck 198 feet down in the English Channel. With 75 officers and men aboard, oxygen may last 40 hours, and rescue teams question why no emergency buoy or debris has surfaced. The Admiralty reported no contact since a faint signal at 8:30 AM, as 25 ships scoured a 2,000 mile area near the Isle of Wight waiting for a surface breakout or new readings.

Moonshine Found Buried Under 27 Year Driveway

D. W. Reddoch Service Station at 901 North East Eighth reported a man missing fuel. The owner unearthed an old bottle of moonshine buried beneath a driveway that had stood for 27 years, revealing a curious and long buried cache.

Allies Slug Enemy Lines Near Chorwon in Korea

Allied forces pressed the west Korean front with heavy air and artillery, advancing 2,000 to 3,000 yards as Reds yielded 13 to 2 miles. Advances centered south and southeast of Chorwon, with a tank action near Chipyong killing about 100 Communists.

BAPTISTS PICK AMARILLO MAN AS PRESIDENT

Ernest J. Loessner of Amarillo was chosen president of the Texas Baptist Sunday School Convention at the closing session in Amarillo. Andrew Q. Allen of Dallas was named corresponding secretary, with a recording secretary to be designated. The next convention will be April 15-17, 1952 in a site to be chosen. The group endorsed resuming annual conventions and backed United Texas Drys on liquor education efforts.
