Tariff boost urged on eggs by West Coast economist

John E. Pickett, editor of the Pacific Rural Press, urged President Hoover and the Federal Tariff Commission to raise the duty on Chinese egg imports from 18 cents to 27 cents a pound. He cited a 27 per cent price slump costing American poultrymen about 200 million dollars last year and warned imports displaced large amounts of feed, depressing U.S. egg prices. The statement was made in an open letter to the tariff panel in San Francisco.
