Ruth Nichols of Rye New York flew the Lockheed Vega to a new women’s three kilometer speed record at 210.685 miles per hour at Detroit’s Grosse Isle Airport. Amelia Earhart Putnam previously held the mark at 181.157 mph. Nichols took off at 6 50 a m to avoid later cross winds.
Davis January, 24, and Miss Tex Hall, 46, were killed in a farm home shooting near Athens Texas last night. Suspect Charlie Douglas, 40, surrendered to Sheriff Baker and was charged with murder in Justice Hall's court. He was moved to a distant jail amid fears of violence.
Partly cloudy conditions in Amarillo and surrounding areas with unsettled western Texas weather tonight and Tuesday. New Mexico expected generally fair and warmer tonight and Tuesday. Temperature extremes recorded today at 1 PM ranged from 64 to 45.

Austin April 13 Fred Upchurch assistant attorney general construed the probation injunction from last week by Carl Estes to apply only to Estes and perhaps his partners in East Texas tracts. He said the railroad commission may enforce pro ration in the rest of the new East Texas field.
Mayor Walker challenged his opponents amid an investigation by the State Legislature. Speaking at a Jewish Theatrical Guild dinner in New York, he proclaimed no apology for public life, admitted shortcomings, and rejected personal attacks while joking about his clothing and tailor.
The Spanish cabinet faced a political crisis as three ministers Count Cande de Romanones Marquis de Alhucemas and Gascon Marin resigned to King Alfonso citing an intolerable Republican victory. The King did not accept the resignations and Romanones called the victory disastrous and vowed not to serve in a government of force.
Two five day old Robert Kelley Reynolds and two day old Frederick Earl Gubelmann were found on a doorstep in Amarillo and delivered to families ready to adopt. The babies were discovered by Mrs. E Gubelmann at 835 Louisiana Street between a fence and the street. Neighbors spotted the bundle but did not realize its significance. Health officer Dr G T Royse and Police Chief W R McDowell confirmed the find and arrangements for adoption were immediate.
Reports from Panama City indicate several United States Marines and Nicaragua national guard members were killed in a clash with bandits at Puerto Cabezas, where bandits captured a train. The cruiser Asheville and the Memphis escort are proceeding to the scene with Marines and sailors aboard.
In Houston on April 13 A P salt water appeared in two East Texas wells. The Magnolia No 1 Florey near Kilgore produces 65 percent salt water while the Burton well offsetting it shows 15 percent salt water after being pinched from 30000 to 200 barrels. Both wells sit high in the field sector.
Reno report says Jack Dempsey former heavyweight champ is in Reno for a divorce at Estelle Taylor's request. Manager Leonard Sachs notes Dempsey remains in love with his wife, who seeks a stage and operatic career, and will likely file a mild incomparability complaint with a probable no contest appearance. Property settlements completed, no alimony or asset issues to be unsettled.
Members of the Panhandle District Medical Society gather in Amarillo for a two day meeting in the Crystal ballroom at the Herring Hotel. The program features a surgery discussion and officer elections with noted physicians on the roster. A note found in a fruit jar on the North Canadian river claims the missing girl is held by boot leggers in an old barn. The message names Loraine Dooley and ties to a highway kidnapping near Edmond last week, with authorities pursuing clues.
Timeliness won first prize for calling The News Globe about the Santa Fe line contract on the North Plains. Second prize went to Mrs. Henderson for reporting a fatal auto crash near the North Highway. Three $1 prizes went to Laster for a drug store robbery report Morgan for a purse snatcher and to a caller about Wallace Beery in Amarillo.
The Supreme Court ruled that income from leases on Texas state lands held for the University is subject to federal taxation. Group No. 1 Oil Corp of El Paso argued the leases were state instruments and exempt from federal taxes, but the government contended the leases are a sale of mineral contents and taxable like other income.

Bids for a city wide gas distribution system to serve all areas were due Tuesday night. The city secretary reported no full proposal had been received Monday morning but contractors were expected to appear before the city commission. Other bids include pipe for water mains to the Tri State Fair grounds and Eakle addition and sewer tile for fire alarm extensions on North Fillmore Street and Lincoln area.
In Austin the House refused to raise the state gasoline tax from four to five cents amid sharp division. An amendment by Rep Englehard to tax refiners instead of wholesalers failed 85 to 0. The Hubbard bill to impose the tax failed the House 114 to 0.
President Hoover urged voluntary service over government charity in a Red Cross speech in Washington. He praised the Red Cross stance against federal relief, arguing private charity preserves national ideals and neighborly responsibility.
