Washington officials dismiss the chance of a major war after Moscow protests that an American B 29 bomber violated Soviet Baltic territory, was fired upon by Russian fighters, and returned fire. The State Department and Pentagon report no inclination to escalate.
US officials indicated that a missing unarmed American Navy plane may have been shot down by Soviet fighters. They expect a sharp Russian protest, increased tension, and further notes while avoiding direct confrontation, noting postwar Soviet expansion without military force.
In Moscow, Foreign Minister Vishinsky read a stern note to the US ambassador protesting what the Soviet government calls a gross frontier violation by an American four engine plane over Latvia last Saturday. US officials deny any such attack, stating no four-engine bombers or missing planes were in the Baltic area and the Navy patrol plane involved was unarmed.
Late today a Danish naval officer said another C-54 spotted an object believed to be a life raft far northeast of the first raft sighting. A B-17 rescue plane with a parachute dropable boat was summoned. a Danish Catalina and the minesweeper Soehes ten were sent to the scene. The Privateer, reportedly involved in a Russian protest note over Latvia, vanished during a routine Wiesbaden to Copenhagen flight. An FB-17 first reported the raft sighting, and Capt. Banta See was identified.
Sweden lodged a mild protest with the US embassy in Stockholm after rescue planes violated Sweden’s territory by flying over the forbidden area around Karlskrona, the Baltic naval base. The foreign office said several rescue planes penetrated the airspace during the search for an American Navy patrol plane.
Two men suffered facial and body burns in an explosion at the International Harvester shop on Tenth and Grant. All three injured men were taken to St Anthony’s Hospital, with a third treated and released. cause of the blast remained under investigation as fire crews contained the blaze in about 30 minutes.
Amarillo youths R W Shelton 23 Don Russell 20 and W H Curly Thomas 33 of Rush Texas are jailed on theft from the person charges. Russell and Shelton face two counts while Thomas faces one. They allegedly took 400 dollars in cash from Charley Biggs Texarkana and Russell and Shelton allegedly took 40 dollars and a wrist watch from Henry Cooper Houston. The trio were arrested last night after stories given to Sheriff Gaither by the three men.
In the Adirondack region and other eastern areas a new coyote dog hybrid has emerged, swifter and more vicious than its parents. Wildlife officials note it breeds across several generations, complicating control methods used in the West. The hybrid attacks deer, livestock, and poultry across New York counties, with some killed during educated responses by a NY hunt.
Tokyo police crack down on gangsters killing 13 in a BIY GRASH incident. The nationwide dragnet arrested 1,778 suspects and found weapons including two spears. Authorities say the operation targeted organized crime activities with possible ties to recent stick ups.
Thirteen bodies recovered from a B 29 crash at the Sandia secret weapons base near Albuquerque. The aircraft from Walker Air Base plummeted seven miles from Kirtland Field during a routine training mission. Secrecy surrounded the site with officials denying exact crash location. The casualty list names 13 airmen including Captain John R. Martin and Captain David H. Foust from various bases.
April construction in Amarillo neared a record, with 48 new home permits issued to Private Enterprise Homes, Inc. pushing the month’s value to 1,671,177 dollars. The city engineer’s records show June 1949 as the record month at 2,392,785 dollars, with February and September also reaching multi million levels that year.
Dr. Pauline Miller of Lubbock is elected president-elect of the Panhandle District Medical Society, to succeed Dr. Allen T. Stewart. Dr. James T. Hall of Lubbock named secretary, Dr. Fred Crumley of Amarillo vice-president. The results announced at a noon luncheon during the district meeting with about 150 physicians present.
Frank Pace Jr. was sworn in as Secretary of the Army in Washington, succeeding Gordon Gray. He previously headed the budget bureau and took the oath before Chief Justice Fred Vinson, with the cabinet and high defense officials present.
