Oil Boom Hits Portales as No. 1 Brown Well Produces
Roosevelt County oil activity surges as Magnolia Petroleum’s No. 1 Brown well on the Brown ranch 38 miles southwest of Portales yields a three hour test of about 1400 barrels daily from the Pennsylvania formation at 8140 feet. The discovery touches local life as J B Brown Jr. a Santa Fe prison inmate up for parole amid a murder case. The field’s potential follows a dry hole history in Roosevelt County and the nearby Cross Roads Field in Lea County. Several deep tests are in progress near Elida and Rogers, with casing expected to be run soon.
