From the seventh floor of the county jail a group of 12 prisoners escaped by descending an improvised fire hose rope after tying up the night watchman. Two hacksaws were found, likely smuggled in on visitors day, as guards and other inmates reacted. Sheriff Binford organized a posse to pursue the escapees.
The third annual Panhandle-Plains dairy show opened in Plainview with 248 animals shown by 85 breeders. 4-H Club youths and vocational students judged production contests on opening day, with a Jersey auction sale and winner parade planned for Thursday. An Amarillo delegation of 200 rides the Santa Fe special train tomorrow, joining in Plainview for the second day of the event. Lions Club members and other civic groups will participate in the trip. The American Legion Auxiliary will lead the Amarillo party.
The Bivins Estate waives all damages for a 17 mile Santa Fe railroad right of way through the Bivins ranch between Amarillo and the Canadian River. Miles Bivins, speaking for the estate, offered the land at no cost to benefit Amarillo and the region, with a committee from the Chamber of Commerce praising the generosity as they consult with other property owners to finalize damages and fund a ROW purchase.
A well near Oklahoma City blew in this morning with an estimated 75 million cubic feet daily. Procure No. 1 reached production at 6010 feet before containment was installed. Owned by Indian Territory Illuminating Oil, it follows the Mary Sudik gasser two weeks earlier and lies near Trosper Park in a congested mushroom district with fire hazards addressed by officials.

Sheriff Bill Thompson says he recovered a car stolen from C. A. Griffith twelve hours before the owner filed the theft report. The vehicle was driven to a local filling station, fueled, then abandoned. The car was stored and the owner later notified. The attendant’s flashlight revealing the gas tank misled the thief about the license plate, prompting the getaway.
Fireman John Connick died after a false alarm sparked a chase through Chicago streets. A fire truck collided with the fleeing vehicle of the person who triggered the alarm, fracturing Connick's skull and leaving him critically injured. His infant son is buried, while Mrs. Connick lies critically ill, unaware of both deaths.
William P Harding aged 65, governor of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and former governor of the Federal Reserve Board, died in Boston at 4:30 a.m. after a year of poor health. He had led the Boston bank since January 1923, and was appointed to the Fed board at its 1914 formation by President Wilson, serving as board governor from 1916 to 1922. He resided at the Algonquin Club.
United States Japan and Great Britain stand ready to convert a tentative three power naval pact into a real treaty with France and Italy kept at arm's length pending quarrels. Ambassador Gibson signaled a three power accord is imminent with a possible wider agreement if France and Italy settle their naval parity dispute.
Amarillo police were asked to seek a quantity of merchandise stolen from a Borger dry goods store yesterday. Besides dresses and clothes, burglars took the cash register, attempting to operate it with unknown method. The register contained $20.
Amarillo again placed among top Southwest cities for above average business conditions in the Babson Sales and Credit survey. The map lists Amarillo as one of two Texas cities and 26 nationwide with favorable sales and business opportunities, with Texas leading in retail sales. Amarillo, El Paso and Port Arthur show the state’s upward trend, and Amarillo has risen steadily since December.
Fire boat and city trucks battled a blaze at Sabine wharves and Union Sulphur Company facilities in Port Arthur Texas. The incident followed reports of buildings and elevators alight, with damage spreading to nearby structures as responders fought to control the flames.
Tickets for the Freiburg Passion play are on sale at the News Globe office. Out of town and Amarillo residents have first choice of seats. Prices range from 1 to 2.50 dollars. Specify matinee or night performances. One matinee is on April 30 and night shows are on April 29 and 50.
Chicago grain trader Arthur Cutten vowed to capture all nine attackers who robbed his Downers Grove home in 1922. He announced plans to prosecute the eighth suspect in Cleveland and pledged to continue the hunt for the ninth, despite imprisonments and a nationwide detective effort.
A five member Amarillo committee presented data to the Dallas Federal Reserve board arguing for a new Amarillo branch and a Northwest Texas district. They cited Panhandle conditions gathered by the Amarillo Clearing House Association and Chamber of Commerce over three months, with potential transfer to Washington if approved.
Miss N. E. Gemmell of Girard Kansas, an American missionary, has been released by bandits in Yuanchow Kiangsi province. She was kidnapped March 30 with two British missionaries after bandits demanded about $10,000 in ransom from each.
H. W. Kellam was indicted by the recent grand jury for driving a car while intoxicated in a collision on North Fillmore a few days ago. Sheriff Bill Thompson arrested him today and he was released on a $2,000 bond.
Governor Dan Moody urged San Antonio Mayor C M Chambers to relocate an unemployment parade to keep demonstrators from passing the Mexican consulate. The call aimed to prevent a publicly planned protest in front of the consulate in UBTIN Texas.
Seaman James Malone aged 42 drowned after falling from the lighthouse tender Aster in Galveston Texas. His body was recovered at midnight.
Five men convicted of robbery with firearms received a total of 90 years in the penitentiary in the January district criminal court term just closed. Jim Talley and Virgil Stalkup drew 30 years each for a daylight grocery hijacking, while A. B. Celey Eddie Davis and Robert Tremble got 10 years apiece for other robberies. The district attorney reported 32 convictions from 37 cases tried, with some sentences suspended or reduced.
