A blast at the Danciger Oil Refinery in Pampa, Texas, killed Jap Bonner, 20, and F. Cook, 26, in a test run of a new cracking unit. Fire crews removed Bonner, while Cook’s body was found nearby. Several others suffered minor burns. the cause remained under investigation. Dan Danciger of Tulsa arrived to probe the incident.
A strong northwest dust storm hit the Panhandle Plains with no moisture in sight. Officials predicted fair, warmer weather after Sunday night as temperatures dipped to 38 to 48 degrees. Plane schedules across Amarillo were disrupted with several flights delayed or cancelled, including TWA, Western Air Express, and American Airways routes.
In Havana on March 5 President Machado decreed a bank holiday through Thursday morning, halting normal financial operations and signaling a temporary pause in banking activities.
The Panhandle Livestock Association holds its annual convention in Amarillo with registration at 8 am and sessions from 10 am in the Red Room of the Amarillo Hotel. Judge H E Hoover of Canadian will speak. Mayor Ross D Rogers will welcome visitors.
Miss Renee Conklin of Seymour Texas, 22, was arrested in a Times Square hotel on a Baylor County Texas warrant for being a fugitive from justice and facing an embezzlement charge. She pleaded not guilty and was held without bail for a Thursday hearing. She said she was ready to return home and that a former sweetheart in Seymour filed the charges.
Washington mourns Senator Thomas J. Walsh of Montana with a state funeral in the Senate chamber tomorrow. President Roosevelt plans to attend as dignitaries gather to honor the veteran of national affairs before his body proceeds to Helena for burial in Resurrection Cemetery after church services at the cathedral.
The Amarillo Clearing House Association announces its change making office for merchants during the bank moratorium will be open Monday from 10 to 11 and again on Tuesday. Service available at the National Bank of Commerce building.
A group of burglars removed a heavy one ton safe from Farmers Bank in Kress before dawn Sunday. The safe contained about $1,100 in currency and silver plus several hundred dollars in travelers checks. Bank president Tom Bagley said the theft was discovered at 9 am after wires dangled from the building. The safe had two time locks set to open Monday at 9. Police suspected use of a trailer or truck to move the safe, aided by a crane or block and tackle. A country-wide search was underway led by officials from Swisher and Hale counties and Tulsa, with no trace yet found.
Bernice Claire and Alexander Gray, top billed radio and music comedy artists, could not pay cash due to a Texas banking holiday. They agreed to sing with an orchestra for luncheon guests at a Dallas hotel to settle their bills after the theater waived exclusive rights to their vaudeville appearances.
At the Tri-State Fair grounds the Third Annual Amarillo Fat Stock Show opens today with cattle swine and sheep barns busy and crowds forecast. The Rainbow Pageant of Progress at Municipal Auditorium begins tonight at 8 with the queen crowning, and auto dealers display at the Auto Building. Panhandle Livestock Association meets at 10 A M.
The Queen of the Rainbow Court Miss Frances Mayhbugh and royal party attend a public ball at Municipal Auditorium with music by Johnny Floyd's dance band. Admission to the dance is $1 and a separate $1.50 cover charges apply for the night club.
A grand Amarillo stage hosts 250 Panhandle beauties with 40 princesses and maids of honor as visiting royalty to the Rainbow Court. Miss Frances Mayhugh of Plainview will be crowned queen by Col. Erasmus Tack, Amarillo editor, with additional contestants Eula Lee Burch Ed McKnight Melba Pipkin and Margaret Collins among others.
Cynthia Lumpkin and others named as ladies-in-waiting to the court for Amarillo visitors. Auto building displays eight automobile dealers five tire houses and four major oil companies for the midday opening. Tonight the Auto Show yields to the Rainbow Pageant with the Auto Follies at 2 30 PM the next afternoon. The Melody Maids Orchestra and Miss are listed among attractions.
Tabulation of more than one fifth of the Reichstag ballots shows a slim majority for Adolf Hitler's Socialists and his Nationalist allies. Of 8,000,000 votes cast Nazis 43.5 percent and Nationalists 7.3 percent totaling 50.8 percent.
Japanese airplanes bomb Chinese concentrations in Jehol province as Chang A Hsiao-Liang’s forces fall back north of the Koupeikow Pass. Jehol City is reported occupied by a Japanese detachment. Chinese defenses under Sung Tien-Ying and Chiang Kai-Shek continue to resist with Hattori’s 14th Brigade moving toward Pingchuan. Continued coverage on page 7.
Senate Democrats plan a caucus to organize for action after Roosevelt’s special session is convened next Thursday. Republicans will announce their chairmanships on Tuesday as they reclaim top positions. several key Dems are slated for chair roles, while McNary aims to lead the minority.
The Eleventh District Federal Reserve Bank said to close its bank and branches March 6 and 7. Texas banking commissioner James Shaw and Gov. Miriam Ferguson issued a proclamation renewing the chief executive’s moratorium. No official withdrawal terms issued yet. penalties possible for banks opening.
Four physicians attending Mayor Germak reported at 10 30 P M that his condition is definitely critical though not as bad as earlier. They said his breathing is labored he is sleeping with a pulse of 128 and hope for morning improvement though not assured.
President Roosevelt proclaims a temporary bank holiday through Thursday and a 100 percent withdrawal basis for new accounts. Clearing house certificates will back scrip exchanges while banks close, and export of gold is embargoed. A special congressional session will consider a relief program.
