New AIDS drugs promise fewer pills and easy use
At the World AIDS Conference, two new medications Sustiva and Ziagen show similar effectiveness to protease inhibitors. They could reduce daily pill counts by about two thirds, offering simpler regimens for patients and expanding treatment options for those with adherence challenges. Both companies seek FDA approval based on conference data. Sustiva enables five pills daily, Ziagen three morning and three evening, with no head to head trials yet.
