City commissioners oppose the private money contract for the Canadian River Dam and will consider the Bureau of Reclamation plan with changes. They clarify where the Canadian River flows relative to the Red River and Arkansas, and offer a map to resolve reader confusion.
Two Santa Fe office workers and wives were cited for a stop sign violation in Jackboro but were released after the town constable admitted he had also run the same sign. The car procession returned to the courthouse. the officer let them go, saying he indeed ran the sign but did not fine them.

CBS United Nations correspondent Winston M. Burdett told Senate investigators he spied for the Communist Party in Europe for over two years in the early 1940s. He quit in 1942 and said the party was a tool of cynical power. He named reports from Finland and Ankara and claimed his first wife Lea Schiavi was assassinated by Russians.
A 2:30 p.m. meeting at the North Amarillo Kiwanis Club Building will discuss relocating Highway 66 through Amarillo. Marshall Formby of Plainview said the Texas Highway Commission considers moving the route to aid enlargement of Amarillo Air Force Base, with potential rerouting of the highway and Rock Island tracks south of the base. Mayor Art Jordan noted the City Commission opposes the move unless traffic on NE 8th Street demands it, to allow development of other streets to absorb increased load.
M Sgt Marion Washington was sentenced to death for the April 3 Poole slaying near Waco Texas by an all white jury after about an hour and twenty minutes of deliberation. Defense planned a new trial motion and argued alibi witnesses while prosecutors offered late testimony to pierce the alibi.
In Dickinson Texas two waitresses tentatively identified a photo of airman Basil Doyle Carmichael as the man sought in a triple slaying linked to a 1953 Dallas murder. Capt. Fritz brought the photo for identification, while Carmichael faces murder charges but awaits arrest or indictment in Dallas.
The Globe-News sponsors two colorful shows this weekend to mark Independence Day. The event includes a Saturday morning start to the third annual Globe-News Model Airplane Contest at Amarillo Air Force Base lasting through Sunday evening. For those who enjoy trained seals, other attractions are planned.
A weekend in Amarillo features a Globe News Free Fireworks Show at 8:34 p.m. Saturday, plus a model airplane contest with events in free flight stunt combat and more starting 8 a.m. The first three in each event win glittering trophies, and a fireworks display with trained seals will cap the night. Continental Airlines rides for the first 80 entrants, free admission for all, and a three part pre show with the Amarillo Air Force Base Band. In Childress a 12 year old Boy Scout, Ruben Clinton Hall, slipped into the municipal pool during a 9 am swimming class and was found unresponsive 20 minutes later at the bottom in four and a half feet of water. He was the first fatality at the recreation spot. His parents are Mr and Mrs R T Hall of 305 Ave C SW.
Hale County farmer C. W. Phares, whose wife has been missing since May 4, told Plainview officers he was kidnapped and shot last night. He carried a minor chin wound described as a bullet burn and went to the sheriff’s office around 2 a.m. to report the incident.
New York reports Cpl Harold M Dunn 26 Baldwinsville N Y a Korean veteran who admitted collaborating with the enemy while a prisoner of war was sentenced by a military court to eight years at hard labor and a dishonorable discharge The tribunal also ordered forfeiture of all pay and allowances as Dunn s wife mother and mother in law defended him claiming no Communist ties in the family and disbelief in Red principles
United States Steel Corp and the CIO United Steelworkers negotiate a wage settlement to avert a midnight strike. Reports say the sides are as much as six cents apart, with McDonald seeking at least a 19 cent hourly boost for 600000 workers now averaging $2.33. Stephens said a settlement before the deadline is possible if both sides concede.
The Amarillo City Commission urges the Canadian River Municipal Water Authority to delay a showdown that could derail a better project plan. It objects to the privately financed proposal, calls for exploring federal options, and stresses not forcing a take it or leave it vote while costs and feasibility are scrutinized.
The International Union of Mine Mill and Smelter Workers authorized its four national officers to call a strike Friday if needed over demands for a 20 cent hourly raise and a modified guaranteed annual wage. About 50 000 to 60 000 workers could be affected as talks with three of the four copper companies continue before the June 30 contract deadline.
