Denver June 30 -A strike deadline for the copper mining industry neared with no settlement in sight. International Union of Mine Mill and Smelter Workers officers might call a walkout any time between late afternoon and midnight as wage talks continue. Pickets planned at Kennecott mines Santa Rita and Hurley New Mexico Friday. Kennecott Ray Mines Arizona offered 12 cent raise. Anaconda Butte 10 cent. American Smelting 2 cents. Phelps-Dodge 10 cent package.
In San Angelo on June 30 negotiators from the CIO Communications Workers of America and General Telephone Co. of the Southwest met as the contract neared expiration. About 2,000 union workers authorized strike action by a 32 to 1 vote if no new agreement is reached. The union covers 2,000 employees across Texas to New Mexico including Louisiana Arkansas and Oklahoma. Rex Harp, local president, said the strike authority was approved.
Ten aboard the Air Force C47 transport were killed when it crashed on Sitkinak Island near Kodiak Alaska. Ground parties recovered eight bodies. two missing. Weather blamed for the crash with rough seas and difficult parachute drops. The aircraft departed Kodiak Wednesday on an air drop mission.

About 75 business and property owners in North East 8th formed a group yesterday to circulate petitions opposing any change in the routing of U S highways 60 66 and 287 through Amarillo. They approved two resolutions and elected Troy Jones of Holiday Inn president. The meeting noted traffic counts and urged preserving the current routes while backing arterials to relieve local traffic.
