George W. Bethel a 65 year old Borger resident died at 1 35 pm from injuries in a Phillips refinery accident. Bethel a carpenter for John M Thurman Construction Co was fatally hurt while working on a two story office structure at the refinery when leaning over a motor crane railing he was struck by an I beam column after the crane operator failed to notice him.
Sunshine counted on 159 of 175 days in Amarillo during 1955. Comparative readings at 3 PM show wind speeds around 15 to 22 MPH and visibility about 12 to 20 miles. Conditions listed as partly cloudy across Houston Dallas Oklahoma City and Amarillo.
A slow moving Navy patrol plane was attacked Wednesday by two Russian MiG fighters over international waters between Alaska and Siberia. Seven crew members were injured after the plane crash landed and burned on St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea. The incident raises concerns about the upcoming Big Four peace talks and drew strong congressional reaction.
Robert B. Anderson, deputy secretary of defense, said he will resign this summer and has no political plans. The statement follows Secretary Wilson's announcement of his notice and speculation about a move back to Texas politics. He emphasized he has no definite plans of any other kind.
Wallace Anshutz, 69, a Farm Bureau official and secretary of Beaver County Farm Bureau, fell from a bluff while fishing near Red Bluff six miles west of Beaver and drowned. A sheriff's search found his body with head and hand apparent in the Beaver River after he failed to return from a fishing trip begun about 6 p.m. The sheriff believes the fall from the high bluff rendered him unconscious.
