L. L. Harman forecasts a dry period through mid February with a later moisture surge lasting a month or more, while Dan True cautions moisture may stay below average through year end. Government forecasters at the air terminal remain the steady option for rainfall predictions.
James Kutcher, a World War II veteran who lost his legs, testified before a Veterans Administration board that he will remain in the Socialist Workers party despite possible cuts to his VA benefits. He denied accusations of aiding an enemy and argued the party is not on the subversive list. The hearing adjourned with no immediate decision, and his $329 per month compensation had been briefly suspended but later restored pending review.
Washington reports the government launched a program to aid small publishers ensure adequate newsprint supply. It requires small newspapers and magazines to form a corporation which may then apply to the Small Business Administration for direct loans.

A trailway bus depot ticket agent in Amarillo alerted authorities about an armed ex convict wanted for robbery. Wesley Emerson of Lubbock was captured with help from sheriff's deputies after being spotted boarding a bus to Lubbock following a hold up at Jett's Service Station. Christine Emerson, 17, surrendered in Lubbock as a robbery suspect. Emerson had been released from a Federal penitentiary in Wyoming earlier this month and was marked dangerous.
A Texas state receiver files a 6.64 million damage suit on behalf of creditors of the defunct General American Casualty Co. naming C B Erwin and 44 officers and others, plus state examiners Larry Blanchard Robert Butler and William Noah, over alleged conspired fraud. The action follows the June 1954 court-ordered receivership and amid political charges involving Garland Smith and gubernatorial candidate Ralph Yarborough.
Lt Gen Randolph McCall Pate is sworn in as the 21st commandant of the Marine Corps at the Pentagon in the presence of Gen Lemuel C Shepherd and other leaders. A surprise kiss from Col Julia Hamblett accompanies the oath, and the appointment letter sets a two year term rather than four.
Randall County Commissioners completed six more right-of-way settlements for the Amarillo Canyon Expressway. The largest payment was 24,250 to E P Deavours for a Hollywood Crossing cafe and service station. Negotiations with A B Hunsley continue as the court aims for a fair agreement and swift condemnation if needed.
A memo to the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce requests a speedy letter to Mrs. Alpha Green of El Monte California noting Amarillo has no available Amarillos. It suggests others contact Joe Ley at 3107 Harrison and a man near Waite Deer with the 700. Ivy reports Royce Riggins at 113 E 34th captured an armadillo.
A four year old fugitive from Kansas City who jumped parole in 1951 gave away his last 21 dollars to Christmas charities before surrendering in Newark New Jersey. Detective Ryall said Frank Jones explained he emptied his pocket after he was taken into custody on Wednesday night.
Sgt. Alvin York of Wolf River Tennessee has applied for the Medal of Honor pension. He wrote the Army from his Tennessee home asking about the extra pension for Medal of Honor recipients at age 65. The Army sent him the certificate to present to the Veterans Administration. Current law provides ten dollars monthly pension payments.
New York reports a brisk year end rally with gains of 1 to 3 dollars per share in most sectors except motors. The Associated Press average rose 1.10 to 180.20, near the Sept 23 high of 181.50. Volume reached 2.82 million shares as traders anticipated a strong finish.
The White House released a statement approved by President Eisenhower asserting that peaceful liberation of captive nations remains a major goal of U S foreign policy. Khrushchev accused Eisenhower of violating the Geneva spirit and interfering in Eastern Europe after the Christmas message to Soviet bloc listeners.
Amarillo expects a mild start to the new year with a slow warming trend and a high near 50 today. Tonight will drop to around 30, then New Year's Day highs near 55. Skies partly cloudy over the weekend with a trace of precipitation recorded Thursday night. Yesterday's highs ranged from 38 in Clovis and Roswell to 47 in Guymon with other readings in Clayton 39 Tucumcari 41 Dalhart 43 and Gage and Childress at 44.

The Interstate Commerce Commission ordered wide freight rate reductions for shipments to from and within the Far West. Cuts range 16 to 29 percent on class rate freight and include a general within region revision. Total annual savings are estimated at 10 rail dollars a year.
