Belligerent New Year's messages from leaders in Malaya Cyprus and Formosa set a grim tone for 1956. UK and Greek officials urged unity against violence while Soviet leaders avoided direct endorsement of belligerence, signaling cautious diplomacy amid Cold War strains.
Senate Majority Leader Lyndon B. Johnson labels the farm price and income decline the nations number one trouble spot. Speaking in Washington he vows swift legislative action to halt what he calls three years of Bensonizing of the farmers and to address farming hardships.
Johnson in an interview criticized Republican leaders for calling the program a failure and urged reworking it. He outlined farm legislation as a priority for the new session but gave few details. The Benson price support system, pushed by Eisenhower and Benson, remains in operation amid Democratic skepticism.
Johnson warned that farm prices and incomes have fallen so long they hurt rural towns as the administration unveils plans for new legislation. The Senate will hold a brief opening session Tuesday noon and recess until Thursday when Eisenhower’s State of the Union will be read by clerks.

Thirteen Democratic senators urged Secretary Benson to act suspending the hog and cattle price slump. They accuse the Eisenhower pledge of equal treatment for perishable producers not being kept and call for an expanded purchase program for school lunches and relief, plus legislative measures to protect livestock producers. The signers include Humphrey Morse Neuberger Murray Mansfield Hennings Scott Chavez Kefauver Kerr Monroney Magnuson and Douglas.
Police said New Year’s Eve was fairly busy with three burglaries and three minor injury car crashes. Only two people were arrested for DUI, a lower count than recent high totals. Burglary at L R Burnett’s home on Alabama exposed silverware and valuables. another at Bill Haynes Auto Salvage exposed tools, tires, and gear. The Twin Drive In Theater reported a cash loss from a cigarette machine. Vandals left a firecracker in the scene.
An Alpine avalanche on New Year's Eve at Parsonn ski area in Davos, Switzerland killed four skiers including two Americans and two French. two more Americans survived unharmed. Alfred L. Schmid and Richard Jackson were among the missing. Schmid’s body was recovered at dawn.
Amarillo and vicinity expect fair and mild conditions with low around 29 and high near 63. Panhandle and South Plains show fair to partly cloudy skies with little temperature change. hourly readings indicate highs near 63 and lows around 54.

National Safety Council president Ned H Dearborn said the current hourly accident rate suggests total deaths during the New Year weekend will be well below the 420 forecast. A Missouri woman, Marie Ann Orrell, 48, died instantly when her car overturned three miles west of Umbarger on U S Highway 60. Her husband George Orrell, 53, and their son Noel, 14, were injured. The crash likely occurred as the driver fell asleep. Funeral plans were pending. Texas toll for the holidays reached 173 deaths with 95 traffic fatalities since December 22.
