US automakers race to expand into a mini car segment with models like the AMC Gremlin at 161 inches and Ford Maverick at 179 inches. GM plans a multi model line and new plants while imports remain cheaper and expansive dealer networks threaten US profits.
Old Man Winter blasts Texas Oklahoma Panhandles and eastern New Mexico with snow and freezing temps. Snow covered 80 percent of the region from Dalhart to Gage while drifting created hazardous driving conditions. Amaryllo reports upper teens. Amarillo area saw 2 inches plus drifts up to a foot. Hereford reports light snow as authorities warn of continued winter conditions.
U S air power and artillery hit North Vietnamese troops northeast of Saigon near Song Be, with 46 enemy dead and no U S casualties reported. Earlier, 79 NVA were killed near a jungle chase complex two miles from Cambodia, as helicopters engaged the enemy and field reports noted a night rocket and grenade assault that killed seven Americans and wounded five.
A second person died Sunday from injuries in Friday afternoon auto mobile tractor crash on U S Highway 87 one mile south of Kress. Mrs Donetta Plett 34 Newton Kansas died at Northwest Texas Hospital where she had been hospitalized in critical condition since Friday. David M Jones 47 driver of the tractor was killed. Vernon Dale Piett 33 driver of the station wagon was in satisfactory condition. Funeral services for Mrs Plett to be announced. Survivors include husband three sons Timmy Tom Tony Tammy her parents and one brother.
President Nixon, at Camp David with aides including John D. Ehrlichman and Henry Kissinger, discussed money and foreign policy before flying to Washington. He plans a two week winter vacation after signaling he will sign the tax reform bill despite a 2.5 billion shortfall.
A powerful snow storm paralyzed parts of New England and upstate New York with at least two deaths. Vermont declares disaster as 44 inches falls, the heaviest December snow in state history per Weather Bureau. New York City sanitation workers are on overtime and coast warnings extend from Eastport to Cape May. Weather extends from the Southern Rockies to the lower Mississippi Valley with heavy snow warnings inland.
Paris reports five French built missile gunboats arrived in Israel after a secret departure. Officials questioned an apparent arms embargo and a supposed sale to a Norwegian oil firm that did not exist. Panama registered Star Boat Oil Co. claims ownership. Oslo contact indicates no Norwegian flag. Ansa noted unusual Israeli ship activity.
Evangelist Billy Graham spoke to about 2 500 youths at a 72 hour rock music festival near the Everglades. He urged them to drop out of their present lives and turn to God, noting the generation's反 attitudes toward establishment and materialism.
Prayer services for Gregory True 18 will be held at 7 30 p m at the N S Griggs Sons Pioneer Chapel with the Rev Joseph Tash reading. Funeral details to follow. Memorials are requested for Alamo Catholic High School Musical Scholarships Fund. True was a senior at Alamo Catholic High School and a member of the orchestra and marching band. He was born in Decatur Illinois and lived in Amarillo 16 years. Morris Frank Porter Jr 18 of 1539 Parr whose 1969 Tascosa High School graduation is noted will have services announced by Blackburn Shaw Memorial Chapel. Porter is survived by his wife Renee and parents and siblings. Randall Judd 19 and Teresa Lou Bennett Judd 17 of 812 Den Dr will have joint funeral services announced by N S Griggs Sons Funeral Directors. Randall was Amarillo born and educated at Palo Duro Caprock. Teresa Bennett Judd was born in Plainview and has lived in Amarillo 12 years. Survivors listed include parents, siblings, and grandparents. See Additional Stories on Page 8.
