Three area crashes claim two lives and injure three

Three separate wrecks Friday on area highways left two dead and three hurt, two in critical condition. David Jones, 46, of Kress, died when his Swisher County loader was rear ended on U S 87 south of Kress. A Newton couple in a station wagon also collided with the loader, sending the woman to Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo in critical condition. Paul Compton Chance, 53, of Earth, died when his car hit a parked tractor near Earth. Arnold Dean Mayes, 28, of Lubbock, was listed in critical condition after his car left U S 87 near Canyon. A negligent homicide complaint was filed against Vernon Dale Plett, 33, of Newton, in the Friday crash involving Jones.

Amarillo Man Helps Light Mayberry Stars on Set

John Garcia 26, Amarillo high school alumnus and lighting technician for Paramount, shared memories from Hollywood. He backs through a set door with George Lindsey as Andy Griffith drenches him in a scuffle on The Andy Griffith Show and Mayberry R.F.D. He plans to return for more Mayberry shoots while pursuing songwriting and a recording company. Garcia has worked on Bonanza Mission Impossible Mod Squad Hogan's Heroes and Manix and hopes Mayberry R.F.D. continues beyond 14 more years. He and his wife Sue visit his parents in Amarillo before heading to Hollywood December 30 for filming starting January 3.

The Amarillo area weather forecast predicts increasing cloudiness and a drop in temperature tonight. Expect scattered light snow late today and again tonight with a high near 50. South winds 10 to 20 mph shift to northerly. Snow chances 30 percent today and 40 percent tonight.

Snowstorm snarls East as freighter explodes after abandon ship

A major winter storm dumped up to two feet of snow from Georgia to New England while in the Pacific the freighter carrying rockets and bombs to Vietnam was abandoned by its captain and 38 crewmen just before an explosion. Fourteen men were rescued, 25 remained missing, and a Greek freighter and Air Force rescue plane searched the area northeast of Midway Island.

The Health Secretary announced the monthly medicare premium will rise from four dollars to five dollars and thirty cents starting July 1. He cited insufficient reserves and recent forecasts of higher costs for more than 19 million beneficiaries.

Dead Man Found with Cash on City Bus

A 70yearold man died in the back seat of a Houston city bus. Police found small paper bags containing about 1000 in cash on his person and in his pockets. Detective A E Delaney noted no identification on the body and some money was brittle due to age.
