Lyndon B. Johnson says Hubert H. Humphrey squandered the 1968 election and damaged Vietnam peace talks. He contends Humphrey lost to Nixon by a few thousand votes and harmed his own prospects.
A retrospective view of 1968 and Johnson’s decision not to seek re election will be aired tonight at 7 30 p m est on CBS with Walter Cronkite. Johnson discusses his past doubts about running and his belief Humphrey would have faced a tougher race in 1968.
Three separate wrecks Friday on area highways left two dead and three hurt, two in critical condition. David Jones, 46, of Kress, died when his Swisher County loader was rear ended on U S 87 south of Kress. A Newton couple in a station wagon also collided with the loader, sending the woman to Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo in critical condition. Paul Compton Chance, 53, of Earth, died when his car hit a parked tractor near Earth. Arnold Dean Mayes, 28, of Lubbock, was listed in critical condition after his car left U S 87 near Canyon. A negligent homicide complaint was filed against Vernon Dale Plett, 33, of Newton, in the Friday crash involving Jones.
John Garcia 26, Amarillo high school alumnus and lighting technician for Paramount, shared memories from Hollywood. He backs through a set door with George Lindsey as Andy Griffith drenches him in a scuffle on The Andy Griffith Show and Mayberry R.F.D. He plans to return for more Mayberry shoots while pursuing songwriting and a recording company. Garcia has worked on Bonanza Mission Impossible Mod Squad Hogan's Heroes and Manix and hopes Mayberry R.F.D. continues beyond 14 more years. He and his wife Sue visit his parents in Amarillo before heading to Hollywood December 30 for filming starting January 3.
In Fort Worth at the Botanical Gardens a gang of youths robbed and injured 3 of 7 couples during a post Christmas stroll. Victims aged 14 to 21 describe lack of police presence as 12 people endured 75 minutes of terror before one arrest in December.

A major winter storm dumped up to two feet of snow from Georgia to New England while in the Pacific the freighter carrying rockets and bombs to Vietnam was abandoned by its captain and 38 crewmen just before an explosion. Fourteen men were rescued, 25 remained missing, and a Greek freighter and Air Force rescue plane searched the area northeast of Midway Island.
New York AP report notes A Gary Shilling of Merrill Lynch warns the U.S. economy faces a major recession in 1970 with 60 to 70 percent odds. He compares the expected downturn to 1953-54 and 1957-58, predicting housing pressure, slowed consumer income growth, and weak appliance and auto sales.
Pan American Airways showcased its new Boeing 747 at Los Angeles International Airport drawing long lines and a multi mile traffic jam. The 362 passenger jet, arriving Christmas night, was closed early to public tours after two courtesy flights and upcoming test flights with press aboard. Regular California to Hawaii service starts in February.
The Health Secretary announced the monthly medicare premium will rise from four dollars to five dollars and thirty cents starting July 1. He cited insufficient reserves and recent forecasts of higher costs for more than 19 million beneficiaries.
A 70yearold man died in the back seat of a Houston city bus. Police found small paper bags containing about 1000 in cash on his person and in his pockets. Detective A E Delaney noted no identification on the body and some money was brittle due to age.
