Bus Plunges Through Drawbridge. 13 Drowned in River
Hopewell Virginia reporters recount a Atlantic Greyhound bus crash on the Appomattox River near Hopewell. Twelve passengers and the driver were aboard from Richmond toward Raleigh when the bus fell 25 to 30 feet into icy water. Rescue teams recovered fourteen bodies while one survivor, Captain J. B. Belch, later died. Lacy McNair, the bridge attendant, reported hearing the crash and seeing the bus roll into the river as Captain Ben Alexander of a tug helped free the trapped passengers. The driver was identified as L. G. Alford of Five Points North Carolina.
