The American Legion with civic clubs and supporters hosts a city gala at the municipal auditorium tonight at 7:30. Santa will distribute thousands of sacks of candy nuts fruit and toys to less fortunate children as part of the community tree and holiday outreach.
The grand jury investigation into Thelma Todd's death remains unsettled as witnesses pictured at the coroner's inquest complicate the evidence. The photo shows R J Anderson H H Cooper R W H Schafer Harvey Priester Mrs Wallace Ford Clarence Hutson Ernie Peters Mae Whitehead and Roland West with Margaret Lindsay Ida Lupino also giving statements about a romantic link involving Miss Todd.
Contributions to the Christmas Tree fund include cash from C P Hutchings five dollars from Texas M and M George J Nichol one dollar a friend one dollar Adkisson and Baker five dollars Hammond Taxi Co three dollars Polk Street Grocery and Market one box of fruit Amarillo Chapter Eastern Star four pounds of chocolate. Chair Al Petersen says more donations are welcome and may be mailed to The Globe News office or to the Legion headquarters at the Municipal Auditorium.
Volunteers at Legion Hall packed a grand 20 foot tree for Amarillo’s community Christmas party at the municipal auditorium. A Petersen led the effort promising one of the finest events with lights and decorations. Those unable to attend due to illness can still be counted by Maverick Club or Salvation Army volunteers.
Dallas dispatch reports friends of W B Hamilton of Wichita Falls say he probably will run against E O Thompson for railroad commissioner next summer. John Wood of Timpson, currently on the state highway commission, may also seek the post, per the Times Herald.
Miss Cornelia Rascon, seven feet tall and 317 pounds at 18, lives on a Chihuahua mountain ranch. She came to El Paso for a permanent wave and grew four inches in two months. She wears size 15 shoes and 56 dresses, fears her size, and hopes medical advice can stop her growth. Her twin Simone is normal. She ordered silvered leather high heels costing 25 dollars.
The Supreme Court indicated it would cooperate to speed rulings on the constitutionality of New Deal laws, agreeing to pass on the Guffey coal act. In a brief session the court issued four decisions and recessed to January 6 to hear views on the Agricultural Adjustment Act Tennessee Valley Authority and Bankhead cotton control laws. Six New Deal acts, including AAA amendments and the PWA housing case, remain before the justices, with continued questions about land condemnation. The decision upheld a dismissal by the Federal District Court for Eastern Wisconsin.
In Alameda California on December 23 Santa Claus rode a Philippine Clipper toward Midway Island but storms forced the China Clipper to return. Captain Edwin Musick, originally to deliver gifts to two Midway children, stayed aboard and the China Clipper resumed its flight after 1414 hours. Pan American Airways will have the Philippine Clipper substitute for Musick delivering the gifts. The children are daughters of a cable supervisor.
Ivy Wilkinson deputy sheriff escaped with minor injuries after a three man pursuit in a mud covered 1935 Plymouth ended with bullets striking the officer’s car. A windshield wiper was driven into the glass and into Wilkinson’s face as the chase moved along Grand Avenue Highway 66 and Highway 33, crossing tracks and a Fort Worth & Denver crossing.
Ioseo Blemenfeld known as Kid Cann pleads not guilty to first degree murder in the Walter Liggett assassination case. Arraigned before District Judge Frank Reed, he appears with lawyer Thomas McMeekin. Trial set for January 20.
Governor Allred announced that Irvin McCreary resigned as state banking commissioner and that Zeta Gossett of Fort Worth was appointed to succeed him. The report also notes the Royal Research Ship Discovery II sailed from Melbourne to Dunedin for fuel before heading to the Antarctic in search of missing explorer Lincoln Ellsworth.
Ida Lupino and Margaret Lindsay testified that Thelma Todd spoke of a marvelous romance with a San Francisco businessman unnamed in the week before her death. The grand jury investigation also heard that Todd's ex-husband Pasquale di Cicco had two engagements with her in that period.
A new cold wave from the northwest chills the nation unexpectedly for Christmas. Northerly regions face subzero temperatures with four to five inches of snow in some states and up to ten inches in others. The Midwest reports four below zero at Moorhead Minnesota and eight below at Devils Lake North Dakota.

About 400 dollars remained to fund the free event with A Peters en as chair. Firemen adopt 15 families and repair toys for tomorrow’s distributions. Goodfellow program reports 199 families adopted. 150 still await aid. Two midnight church services mark Christ is born and KGNC will broadcast the sacred music.
Rep Bankhead of Alabama returned to the capitol to lead the House Democrats and forecast two points. He expects the cash bonus to pass the House even against a veto, and that the Townsend old age pension plan will likely not be voted on in the January session. He expects the bonus question to be brought up as last session, targeting a January 13 vote on the Patman bill to pay the bonus in new currency.
A. C. Smith of Clifton was convicted by a district court jury in Cleburne and sentenced to 40 years for the slaying of Roy Yocham, also of Clifton, whose body was found near railroad tracks on September 6.
Associated Press reports Britain cautious on new sanctions though moving to implement practical terms of League support. Talks among British and French staffs deemed satisfactory, with similar diplomacy in other capitals. Paris notes Turkey seeks fortification of the Dardanelles, possibly Rhodes return, seen as price for cooperation against Italy.
In Sapulpa Oklahoma two bullet pierced bodies were identified as L A Simpson Piedmont farmer and his son Warren 14 who vanished a month ago. Relative statements link the deaths to Chester Comer the hitchhiking gunman. The discovery followed dog identification at a local undertaking establishment. Governor Alfred appointed Ralph W Yarbrough as judge in Austin Texas 53rd district succeeding Charles A Wheeler who resigned over salary medicine costs.
The Interstate Commerce Commission will act soon on Examiner I L Koch's report recommending rail fare drops from 3.60 cents to 2.2 cents per mile. The plan, filed after a detailed reviving-the-railroads hearing, also seeks removal of the Pullman surcharge. Western and some southern lines had already tested reduced fares.
