John Cutler Edwards died Monday night in a hotel room fire at the Angelus Hotel on West 6th. He apparently slept while smoking in bed as the mattress burned for hours before police and firefighters arrived. Edwards, 37, a laborer born in Salt Lake City, is survived by his parents in Logan, Utah. Funeral arrangements to be announced.
New York ends eight day subway strike that disrupted transit state law and court orders. About 1 500 Motormen and craft union members cheered a back to work call. Leaders say the strike achieved partial aims though full recognition was not won.
A Stratford town plan aims to secure a physician for sobriety programs, promising better health services. Officials say the effort centers on medical access and public safety, with community groups backing stronger health outreach.
Five Amarillo high school student councils met with Judge Jerry Kolander to discuss youth crime deterrents.
