Zone 4 voters in the Big Bean Conservation District will choose a ranchman to serve as supervisor on the Soil Conservation District Board for five years. Balloting runs 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Forchheimer’s store with Miles Pierce Luther Anderson and others eligible. Bill Sohl currently serves as supervisor. Highlights of Southwest Conference 1961 football games will be shown at Alpine Buck Boosters Friday at 7 a.m. in the Home Ec Building High School. Public welcome. Coffee and doughnuts served.
El Ocotillo staff sponsors a contest among home rooms at Alpine High School to boost annual sales. The first homeroom reaching 100% annual purchases will receive punch and cookies from the staff, while the group aims for a 3 percent discount for early payment to the publisher.
A reader argues that newspapers must rely on broad financial support from the community and merchants to continue delivering fair and impartial news. They caution against expecting a few merchants to subsidize the entire publication.
Mrs. Avora Owens of Brewster County was elected 2nd vice president of the County Treasurer's Association of Texas at the Austin convention. She moves up from 3rd vice president and will be membership chairman for the coming year. James Fuller of Longview was named association president. The 1963 convention is planned for McAllen. Speakers at Austin included Waggoner Carr John Connally Judge J. C. Davis and Robert S. Calvert.
At 12 30 p m yesterday a sedan driven by Bryan LaBeff collided with a truck driven by Charles M Campbell at the Fort Davis highway and Avenue D intersection. Wesley Rice a passenger in the LaBeff car suffered a slight concussion and abrasions and was taken to Brewster County Memorial Hospital. Bryan LaBeff sustained chest bruises and the sedan was heavily damaged. Chief of Police Jack Johnson investigated.
City Council terminated Henry Richberg from duties with the police department effective October 1 and approved one month severance pay after an executive session. No replacement was named. Voting for dismissal were Newell McCollister and Beard. Lockhart abstained. McCollister had proposed free parking for on duty officers but withdrew after discussion.
The oral vaccine administration originally set for November 11 in Brewster County was postponed after a Tuesday evening meeting of the Woman's Hospital Auxiliary. The notice cites administrative reasons for the delay.
Over 2000 sportsmen are anticipated for the annual Trans Pecos antelope hunt in Brewster County and the Big Bend region. Permits issued include 1548 buck and 447 doe for landowners. Two extra hunting days and weekends boost season, with aerial census data guiding population estimates.
Congressman Rutherford, ex Sul Ross student and Marine veteran, will deliver the keynote at the Sul Ross Homecoming on Saturday October 6. The day includes an all college assembly at 10 39 AM, a parade ending at Jackson Field for a 2 30 PM game against Texas Lutheran, then a banquet and dances in the evening.
The Big Bend Sportsman's Club will host a free barbecue at Kokernot Park at 4 p m Friday to honor antelope hunters. Lee Sanford DeVoll district conservationist and club president urges ranchers and hunters to attend for fellowship and to get acquainted. Last year’s barbecue for Swaters was a success and again hunters will have time to reach their hunting spots afterward.
Slow rains began in Alpine and the Big Bend Davis Mountains area Tuesday morning and continued, totaling 1.15 inches by 2:30 pm per The Avalanche gauge. Ranchers expect green shoots and winter feed as grass had dried in the past two weeks. last significant rain was Sept 7 with .24 inch.
City council members rejected Dr. W E Lockhart's plan to buy water rights from Flora Daugherty and Perry Cartwright for 110090 with annual 5000 payments and 4 percent interest. Newell opposed the resolution but supported recording it, while Beard, McCollister also voted against.

Power will have a car wash on Saturday September 29 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Dick Bryan's service. Cars will be washed for $1.30 each. Pick up and delivery service available for owners who cannot bring their car or wait.
Mrs Lillie Phillips returned home this week from an extended visit with relatives in Groesbeck. While away she underwent cataract surgery in Waco.
Sul Ross State College reports enrollment climbing with 1281 students enrolled by midmorning. Enrollment continues through Monday October 1 with six West Texas extension classes totaling 186 students in Odessa Midland San Angelo Sierra Blanca Del Rio and Eagle Pass. Public school teachers may join Saturday classes and about 75 are expected to commute to Alpine for enrollment.
Joel Edward Reed completes the psychiatric nurse technician program at Austin State Hospital and earns an Associate of Science from Blinn Junior College and a certificate from the Board for Texas State Hospitals. A 1959 Skidmore-Tynan High School graduate, he lives with wife Adrienne Chaney at 4413 Ave. Ann Austin. parents J J Reed at 201 N 13th Street Alpine.
