Andy Porras a Sul Ross graduate joins San Felipe High School Del Rio as sponsor of the Mustang Round-Up paper. He sends The Avalanche a copy of the first issue. his sister Sylvia is a reporter and wrote the editorial.
Remaining funds from Project Vaccine were donated to the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. A check for 8.25 was handed to Mrs Avera Owens, county chairman of the March of Dimes, aiding a laboratory in San Diego. Vaccine for Mexican villages near the Rio Grande was administered by Dr. W E Lockhart of Alpine. Catholic Mothers' Club officers were named Olga Gallego president Cabina Jimenez vice president Margaret Rojo secretary Angelita Valenzuela treasurer Irene Salgado reporter.
Barbara Jane Grubb, 17, Fort Davis, won the District 6 beef cattle award at the Odessa Record Books Elimination Contest. Her record book advances to the state contest with a chance at a trip to Chicago's International Livestock Show. She is a longtime Brewster Jeff Davis 4-H member and current club president with strong cattle judging and demonstration skills.
Aida Hernandez was elected president of the Alpine High Pep Squad at a meeting last week. Rosie Adamson was named vice president Yolanda Tucker secretary treasurer Candy Weston reporter and Hortencia Hernandez Estela Lara sergeant at arms.
Dr W E Lockhart Alpine medical chairman of Brewster County Oral Polio Vaccine Committee states the Sabin oral vaccine is perfectly safe. He warns against erratic public health claims and cites global use with no ill effects. He notes polio’s seasonality and Sabin’s guidance on timing and epidemic context.
Guests in the home of Mr and Mrs W D McCall over the weekend included Mr and Mrs L H Hill of San Antonio brother and sister in law of Mrs McCall, Mr and Mrs al McCall of Cordova Alaska son and daughter in law, and Jean and Patti Stewart of El Paso granddaughters. The Earl McCalls will be in the States for a month and Mr and Mrs Hill attended a reception given by Dr and Mrs Bryan Wildenthal Saturday after the college game which brought former friends who had lived in San Marcos.
Alpine City Council approves up to 20 more street lights at 1.25 monthly per light from West Texas Utilities Co. Parking zone for library patrons set. Junk removal ordered at Stockton and 10th Street corner. City map corrections entered. Chief Johnson to study police department changes. six employes sign up for group insurance with payroll deduction. Taxi franchise inquiry referred to police committee. Water well ordinance read but no action.
Republican governor candidate Jack Cox will visit Alpine next Wednesday September 26 for a 9 to 10 a m coffee at the Holland Hotel to meet supporters. Cox is vice president of Pico Drilling Co former Texas legislator with six years on 12 committees and active in Breckenridge civic affairs. He holds Lone Star Farmer Degree from Future Farmers of America and received Freedom Foundation Awards in 1958 1959 and 1962. He is a lieutenant commander in the U S Naval Reserve.
Jeff Graham of Alpine was named a counselor in the State Department of Education division of vocational rehabilitation. He will counsel public school children and adults in a large West Texas area including Alpine Marathon Fort Stockton Pecos and El Paso. He is undergoing training and holds an MA in counseling and guidance from Sul Ross State College, with studies also at Texas Tech.
Aine Butane Co. won the 1962-63 Alpine Public Schools butane contract with a low bid of 0.0695 dollars per gallon. Highland Butane offered 0.0698 dollars and Alpine Butane Co. 0.07 dollars per gallon. Bids were opened at a special school board meeting last Friday.
Dr. W. Lockhart council member urges acquisition of permanent exclusive water rights across four land sections in Sunny Hen area to support anticipated residential college and industrial growth. Proposals include paying $55 000 for rights on Sections 22 and 23 and modifying contracts for Section 24. Existing wells would come under city possession with staged payments and 4 percent interest.
Mrs. Charles L. Thomas, 89, longtime Sul Ross State College faculty member and former head of the Foreign Languages Department, died September 17 in Brewster County Memorial Hospital Alpine. She taught at Sul Ross from 1920, helped found the faculty, and sponsored student societies. Funeral held September 18 at First Methodist Church Alpine. burial in Elm Grove Cemetery.
Local citizens will greet Sul Ross State College and Alpine Public Schools at a West Texas barbecue at Kokemot Lodge tonight. Food starts at 6 15 p m and runs until served. Alpine Chamber of Commerce sponsors with Sul Ross committee led by Jack Frost and Bill Winter. Tickets are sold at several shops or from Marvin Kay, Marvin Pierce, or Dick Tucker. Rotary Club hosts an informal get together, and Norman Beam hopes the event becomes a highlight honoring the schools.
The Band Boosters Club will meet at 7 30 tonight in the band hall. Parents with children in the band are urged to attend.
