Fort Davis mourns the death of Mrs. B. A. Johnson who died Sept. 7 at an Alpine hospital after illness. A longtime resident, she joined the Presbyterian Church 51 years ago and was remembered as a friendly neighbor and devoted homemaker. She is survived by her husband, five children and multiple grandchildren and great grandchildren. service conducted by Rev. Low Bid for Salk Drive Work Sets Park Road Project
Ballard and Hail of Uvalde submitted the low bid of 234 469.24 dollars on the 7.3 mile road between Santa Elena Canyon and Castelon in Big Bend National Park. Seven bids were received, the low bid accepted, with construction expected in a few weeks. A separate drive in Alpine promotes Salk Institute support with a microscope pin and tag day on September 15, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary to raise funds for the institute opening in 1963 under Dr Jonas Salk.

Odie Grubb of Fort Davis was elected president of the Big Bend Livestock Show Committee succeeding George Mills of Alpine. The group set January 19 for the 1963 night show and outlined new 4 H and FFA quarter horse classes plus four fat lamb classes including fine wool, medium wool, and Southdown divisions.

Two Men Hurt In 2 Car Crash West Of Marathon
A head on two car crash 4 miles west of Marathon on U S Highway 90 around 3 p.m. Thursday September 6 sent Gerald Frank 26 of Miami Florida and Robert Kitchen 40 of Los Angeles to Brewster County Memorial Hospital with chest injuries and a broken leg respectively. A trailer carrying two Palomino show horses was attached to Kitchens car and the animals were killed in the collision.

Permits issued for annual Antelope Hunt in West Texas
Over 2000 permits have been issued for the Antelope Hunt to be held in the Trans Pecos area of West Texas from September 29 to October 7. Conservation Officer Sanford DeVoll of Alpine notes the Antelope herds are in excellent condition and cites a 1961 62 Brewster County hunting report with 65 shooting preserve licenses sold and 97 percent hunter success.

G Johnson of Park Dies at 47 in Texas Park
Gunnard Johnson, 47, longtime National Park Service employee at Big Bend National Park, died after a heart attack in Brewster County Memorial Hospital. He recently moved from Grand Teton, worked 18 years in the service, and is survived by his wife, his mother, a brother in North Dakota, and two sisters. Funeral services pending in Belfield, North Dakota, with body sent there from Alpine. Geeslin Funeral Home guided local arrangements.
