Reports say conditions are the best in a decade with 3 to 5 inches falling across the region and rivers filling, though showers remained scattered with several ranches recording 1 to 3 inches in multiple locations.

Expected Attendance Rises at Sul Ross State College

Indications show 950 to 1000 students will attend Sul Ross this semester, a 12 percent rise from fall. Regular classes start soon with registration through Sept 27. Over 600 upperclassmen and about 295 freshmen registered by Tuesday. Sul Ross and 11 state colleges met in Austin to discuss selling about 17 million dollars in bonds for a new gym, science building equipment, and dining hall expansion. 12.375 million of the bonds were sold at 3 percent to mature in eight years.

Joyce Heads Tax Office for Alpine Independent School District

A. J. Sack Joyce, ex school board member, named tax assessor collector for the Alpine Independent School District. Office to open in the Morrison Building at North Strand Avenue with current Brewster County tax arrangements ending after the new rate is set before January 1. Board plans to boost revenue for rising school costs and discussed unsed band uniforms.

Hotel to Lease Dining Facilities After Closing

JC Henderson announced the Holland House coffee shop and dining room will be leased to a restaurant operator as the hotel corporation ends its dining facilities. The new lessee has not been named, with negotiations ongoing with several individuals.

City Paves 27 Blocks With Aid Of County And Property Owners

Alpine finishes 27 blocks of new streets with Brewster County and private owners backing the project. Jones Bros. laid asphalt. property owners paid 70 cents per linear foot. A 4450 foot runway at the municipal airport was paved. alleys and intersections funded by the city.

Doctors Admitted To Hig Bend Counties Medical Society

Dr Dayle Lancaster of Port Stockton and Dr Genet Hichard of Sanderson were admitted as members at a Holland House Hotel meeting. Scouters Plan Fund Drive for Boy Scout Support

Truck Driver Reports $25 Robbery East of Dryden

A truck driver told Alpine officers he was robbed of about $25 east of Dryden this week, but police discounted the claim saying he would have reported the hold up in Sanderson or Marathon instead of continuing to Alpine.

Professor Barred Over Oath Refusal at Sul Ross State

Dr. Walter H. Baker was set to join Sul Ross State College as an assistant professor of geology but declined to sign the non Communist oath required of state employees. His appointment was withdrawn and college president Dr. Bryan Wildenthal said the state could not put him on payroll. He reported the matter to FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover.
