Alpine honors fallen graduate in hunting accident

John Votaw an 18 year old Alpine High School graduate was killed while rabbit hunting near Sterling City. Sheriff Bill Green said the accident occurred when he tripped over deep ruts and discharged his 12 gauge shell near his right eye. Funeral services were held at the First Methodist Church with a long, prominent funeral procession.

Alpine School Enrollment Increases

Noon Tuesday enrollment in Alpine Public Schools rose to 958 pupils from 931 year earlier, with Alpine High School at 221, Alpine Central 344, and Alpine Centennial 393. Principal Roscoe Morgan forecasts at least 60 more enrollments this week at Centennial, risking crowded primary classes and possibly one more teacher.

Alpine Cowboys Win Second at NBC Tourney in Wichita

Alpine Cowboys finish 2nd at the 24th National Baseball Congress in Wichita after a 8-7 final loss to Drain Ore Black Sox. Four Cowboys earn NBC all star honors. team posted 13-1, 2-0, 12-0 and 12-0 wins in tournament play before the final.

Pistol Kills 3 Year Old Boy in Alpine Home

Rickey Dean Bryan Jr. died after finding a neighbor’s .38 pistol in a car and shooting himself Sunday morning. The incident occurred on Avenue D near North 8th Street in Alpine. His family, including parents Richard and [Mrs.] Bryan and brother Mike, noted the tragedy at Brewster County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were held at Livingston Funeral Home with burial at Elm Grove Cemetery.

Travel to Big Bend Park Steady in August Attendance

Big Bend National Park Supt George W Miller reports August visitation at 8909, up 12.4 percent from 1957. Year to date totals show 57300 visitors through August, down 2 percent from 58559 a year earlier. Labor Day weekend drew heavy use with 370 visitors Saturday night and campground and cabins at capacity. Eight new guest rooms opened for the holiday, and part of a new Lower Chisos campground was used to handle campers.

River Road bids called for paving 14 miles in Far West Texas

Bids will be opened in Austin on Tuesday September 16 for paving about 13 605 feet of River Road from the Presidio County line to a mile east of Terlingua on FM 2462 The Texas Highway Dept began advertising for bids in a legal publication The project covers grading structures base and surfacing The road extends from Study Butte to Terlingua and toward Presidio as state aims to extend paving to Big Bend area when Mexico completes the Ojinaga Chihuahua City highway

Rev Robert Bristol Takes Post at Marfa First Christian

The Rev Robert F Bristol, longtime pastor of the Christian Church in Marfa for 12 years, returned home to the Davis Mountains this week to become minister of the First Christian Church. He succeeds in the Marfa church with a new assignment.

Lobos Begin Grid Practice At Sul Ross Camp

Sixty candidates reported to Sul Ross State College to begin workouts for the 1958 season. Coach Graves and Ingdon will pick the squad from 15 lettermen six squadmen and many transfers and freshmen. The line features nine lettermen led by Georgie Plunkett and Connie Rudd who have conference honors. Plunkett is an All-American pick by Goldberg Allen committee.

Blakeys Take One Year Leave From Big Bend Park Concessions

Charley and Margo Blakey, managers of National Park Concessions in Big Bend since April 1954, begin a one year leave. Mrs Blakey returns to Kentucky to teach to safeguard her teaching certificate and pension. Mr Blakey will stay until about Nov 1 then relocate to Edmonton Kentucky to work on converting a drug store to a Rexall. They will be replaced by Buell and Fra Denumbrun, with Denumbrun taking over NPC operations at Big Bend.
