Scrapyard Drive Sees Low Local Response in Rally

Nephew of Alpine Woman Credited With Downing Five Japanese Aircraft

Mrs. R A McMurry of Alpine learns her nephew Sgt John Frederick Barrick of Odessa earned the Distinguished Flying Cross for downing five enemy planes. He battled through damage and burns after his engine failed, landed safely, and wormed two hours back to Chinese lines despite injuries. His discharge followed recent hospital treatment. his sister Mrs J E Barrick and Mr Barrick live in Odessa.

Famous Shafter Mine Is Closed

A vital blow to Presidio county's economy comes as workers of American Metal Company of Texas stop work at the Presidio time in Shatter with the mine property closed. The payroll has averaged about $37,000 to $38,000 monthly, plus another $22,000 monthly in operating costs routed through county trade channels. The loss signals a long-term economic impact for Highland area, especially with Victory defense activity ending.

These West Texas Boys Get Their Wings

Three West Texas youths from Alpine, Fort Davis, and Alpine area receive Air Force wings. Lieut George E Godsey, now in Lufkin, trained at Brooks Field and studied at Sul Ross college. Lieut Robert L Withers trained at Goodfellow and Brooks Fields. Lieut John L Sublett, Alpine native and Sul Ross attendee, finished at Lake Charles Louisiana.

Wew Big Bend Archdeacon Assigned to Church Duties

The Wew Big Bend Archdeacon will resume duties and attend regular services next Sunday at the Episcopal church. Mr. Martin formerly served as chaplain at the U S Marine hospital Fort Stanton New Mexico and a missionary to interned German and Japanese sailors at the camp there. He has also worked with about 200 tubercular seamen of various nationalities now naturalized Americans.

Watermelon Feast Attracts Hundreds On Church Lawn

About 180 people attended a Baptist Sunday school watermelon feast on the church lawn Monday evening. The Texas Panhandle grown melons, raised by a brother of Mrs. Witiner wife of the pastor, were large and ripe with 22 melons weighing a little over half a ton in total, averaging near 50 pounds each.

Presidio Valley Farming Area Damped by Flt

Heavy Rio Grande flooding hit the Presidio area damaging bottomland and crops. A Santa Fe locomotive with tender and a tank car plunged into the river after the roadbed failed. Two sections of the international bridge between Presidio and Onaga were washed away, cutting traffic for weeks.

Alpine shooters shine at Presidio pistol club meet

Bruce Duncan of Alpine won the medal match shooting the nations match course at the Presidio pistol club gathering held last Sunday. Connie Duncan of Alpine placed second and W G Fielder of Alpine took third. Fielder earned the master medal while Bruce Duncan won expert and Connie Duncan the sharpshooter in their respective classes.

In a letter to the Alpine Avalanche Eugene Thompson administrator of the Big Bend Land Department expresses appreciation for cooperation by local landowners and firms in the park land-buying program. He notes land purchases cover most of the required acreage and thanks officials, judges, and citizens for aiding the effort to create the Big Bend National Park.

Clergy Attend El Paso Conference District Leaders Elected

USO Center For Alpine Is Sought

A survey for a USO recreation center in Alpine was conducted by Miss Addie Moe Leigh of the Federal Security Agency. The Alpine chamber of commerce requested study, noting potential WPA or USO plans and sponsoring organizations such as YMCA YWCA or National Catholic Community Service for operating the center.

Housing crisis eyed by Marfa Alpine chamber group
