County Junk Rally Planned in Brewster County

Sul Ross to start full wartime program Sept 15

An accelerated war service plan will bring Sul Ross State College into full operation by September 15. Dr. H. W. Merelock announces intensified academic offerings, expanded shop and pre engineering gear, and strong Navy V-5/V-1 training, with six V-5 quotas set for the year. Jurors Excused After Damage Case Verdict

A 1m district court jury returned a verdict for the plaintiff in Blair vs Stirman awarding damages and injunction. Jurors were excused for the term and the August term adjourned following the verdict.

Commissioners Host Barbecue For Big Bend Park Team

Members of the Texas Big Ben Land department and Texas State Parks board who have worked on land acquisitions for Big Bend National Park were guests at a barbecue hosted by Perry Cartwright Cas Edwards and Lee Smith last Friday night at the old Payne ranch north of town. Park officials Eugene Thompson R L Cartledge Frederick B Isley Ea Johnson attended along with T J Cartwright Jim Wilson and Sheriff Clarence Hord. Some officials were absent due to prior commitments or departure.

Special Rates For Part Time Study at Sul Ross

New residents arriving in Sul Ross State college district are advised of part time study options at Alpine. The fee for one course three semester hours is 7 50 per semester with 2 for each extra hour. Two or more courses carry a 3 00 fee. Student activity fee 7 00 is optional. Business Administration offers 28 courses including beginning and advanced work. Spanish Home Economics art and music also suggested for part time study.

Shurcham returned from Oklahoma after her sister Mrs. Ira Speed died, funeral attenders listed from Dallas to San Antonio.

Wool Shipped By Local Firm Brings Top Market Prices

Alpine Wool and Monair Co reports shipment of four and a half carloads of wool with one eight month clip valued at 40 to 45 cents per pound. The Merrill clip of 37,000 pounds of 12 month wool fetched 45 cents per pound. Prices are said to be higher than at other points recently. The firm has two more cars of 12 month wool to dispose of.

Attendance rises as Alpine schools start 1942 term

Alpine city schools opened for the 1942 43 term with a 79 student attendance gain over the same day last year per Supt Dick Bankhead. Central elementary led with 259 students vs 167 last year while junior high and high schools posted slight declines. Enrollment figures for the 1942 term and current session summarized.

Alpine Volunteer Fire Department Dance Set for Sept 19

Chief Bill Dorris announced the Alpine volunteer fire department will hold its annual dance at the courthouse on Saturday night September 19. Part of the proceeds will buy coveralls for the junior firemen now organized and active. Juniors will sell tickets in the coming days.

Big Bend land purchase triumph faces few hurdles

Alpine merchants note Texans celebrate the completion of most Big Bend National Park land acquisitions. The 750000 acre program, begun a year earlier,advanced despite injunctions and legal delays. State Parks Board with Frank Quinn and aides, plus federal advisers, oversaw appraisals, titles, and land tests, condemning only two tracts.
