Joe Brady to Attend Old Spanish Trail Meet

Joe Brady of Alpine will attend the Old Spanish Trail Association meeting in San Diego California on Friday September 25 as a Texas delegate. Other delegates include John Dodson and Joe Taylor of Del Rio. The Brady couple left for a West Coast vacation and plan to return around September 2. The OST, succeeding the U S Highway 90 Association, is headquartered in Tucson Arizona with Ed Goyette acting as OST secretary.

Central School PTA Meeting Set for Wednesday

Central School PTA will meet at 4 p.m. Wednesday September 23 at Kokernot Lodge with Dr. Noble Armstrong as principal speaker. Working parents are invited after 5 p.m. It will be a PTA party that counts as a regular meeting and a room count will be taken.

Feeder Calf Tour Opens Saturday in Corn Belt

Corn Belt feeders from Illinois and Iowa will join the Highland Hereford Breeders Association on a two day tour September 19 20. Cattle will be inspected on ranches in Presidio Brewster and Jeff Davis Counties with a barbecue lunch served at noon. The group will assemble at the Paisano Hotel Marfa and depart at 9 a.m. Saturday and again from the Holland Hotel Alpine on Sunday. George Jones chairman said cattle will be grouped for easy inspection and a public address system will be used.

City Crews Open Creek Crossings and Lay New Water Lines

Alpine city crews advance water and sewer projects across creeks and golf course areas. Crews have dozed the 9th Street crossing and plan a hard surface, near completion at the 2nd Street Alpine Creek crossing by the golf course, and extend sewer lines in East Alpine crossing Southern Pacific tracks toward South Alpine. A large 8 inch line will run from Sunny Glen to city connections. The ditching machine receives upgrades and a side boom speeds pipe handling. Foreman Cobos leads crews installing pipe and fittings while valves arrive from New York and San Antonio for future connections. About $40 thousand of the $12 thousand Water System Bond remains unspent, with $1,500 in the water fund for pipe purchases. Mayor Lockhart remarks on progress.

Citywide cleanup drive planned by Alpine Chamber of Commerce

Alpine Chamber of Commerce directors launch a wide city cleanup drive in cooperation with civic clubs. The drive runs through the week of October 12 to 17 with county trucks and service club volunteers collecting trash on October 16 and 17. Marvin Kay, cleanup chair, urges property owners to clear vacant lots and neighbors to help. Weeds harbor mosquitos and frost will threaten a fire hazard if not cut. county and city trucks will handle trash in containers only.

Delegates to Report on Boys and Girls State Programs

Delegates who attended Boys State and Girls State last summer will report at a 7:30 p.m. meeting of the American Legion and Auxiliary at the Legion Home on Monday September 21. Boys State delegates were Charles Patterson Jr Dennis Williams and Russell McAfee Jr. Girls State delegates were Car lene Hegelund and Marion Cowell. The programs in Austin are sponsored by the Legion and Auxiliary to educate youth about democratic government.

Asphalt Work Begins Soon on US 90 Surfacing

Highway officials say finishing work will start today on 11 miles of US 90 from the Santa Fe underpass to Marfa. Base material will be deepened with asphalt and water, staining may be reduced by lowering speed and avoiding puddles, and traffic will be guided by pilot vehicles along shoulders to ease delays.

Centennial Tops Marfa Eleven 300 In Nonconference Affair

Centennial junior teams defeated Marfa elementary 300 while Pee Wee teams played to a scoreless tie. Higinio Bustamante scored twice for Al Gine Juniors with Ruben Parras and Sonny Llanes adding one each. Llanes intercepted a Marfa pass and ran for a TD. Centennial travels to Van Horn for another conference game.

Alpine Chamber of Commerce traffic safety committee reports no warrant for traffic lights at the Holland Avenue intersections of 5th and 6th Streets. Texas Highway Department studies show few accidents in 12 years and little delay from current traffic, with alternate controls such as traffic islands or a traffic officer suggested for peak times.

Wardrobe Planning Course Offered at Sul Ross

Two Rangers Transferred From Big Bend National Park

Charles H. McCurdy a Big Bend ranger since 1957 and Edward J. Widmer a Basin Ranger staffer were reassigned to Zion National Park and Bandelier National Monument respectively. Their families accompanied them and the move was praised as aligning with Park Service promotion policy. No replacements named.
