Alpine Grid War Opened With Plans for Sophomore League
Alpine eyes a continued tie with the Boston Red Sox as the Sophomore League may operate next summer. Kokernot sponsors eight teams with Alpine aiming to stay in the loop while San Angelo, Odessa and others shift divisions. The Cowboys clinched the league title last Saturday at Kokernot Field before 455 fans as Knutson and Schwall led the victory.

Old Rivals Face Tough Fight In Marfa Season Opener
Alpine Bucks open the 1969 football season in Marfa against their longtime rival Marfa Shorthorns. The Bucks, youth rich and weight light, seek a fresh start after 1953 and 1946–52 Shorthorn streaks. Starting lineup lists several freshmen and juniors. Shorthorns average 180 pounds with a strong senior presence. Band performances and an 8 pm kickoff mark the opener ahead of Sul Ross and Murry games.

Jimmie Yates recalls arriving in Alpine in 1912 with his family from Tucumcari New Mexico. He describes guiding 17 horses four mules and a mountain buggy, 21 days from Quay County to Fort Davis, then settling on 40 acres 12 miles southwest of Alpine. The family later visited old friends and Big Bend National Park amid rain.

A 218000 contract is awarded to Cecil Ruby Co of Austin to reconstruct about miles of State Highway 17 through Limpia Canyon from Fort Davis. The project widens grade for a 24 foot pavement with 6 foot shoulders, widens six Limpia Creek bridges, and rebuilds Molino Bridge near the old fort entrance. Work starts Sept 14 and aims to finish before 1960 tourist season. traffic will pass through construction with a 40 mph speed limit in work zones. A meeting with contractor and officials will discuss safety and procedures.

Sul Ross Opens Grid Season Here Saturday With McMurry
Sul Ross will host McMurry at Jackson Field on Saturday Sept 12 as the 195% football season opens. Alpine Board Approves Two New Teachers and Budget Actions
The Alpine School Board approved two new teachers Mrs Mary Stowell to Centennial first grade and Mrs Bobbie Reed Combest to the high school on a half day basis. They amended the 1958 59 budget and signed 1959 60 budget forms due in Austin. Thirty six teacher contracts approved in May were signed. Alpine High seniors Morris Green and Jackie Rawls were named class presidents with Garrett Brigas chosen by sophomores.

Study Club To Sponsor Talk On Astronomy
The Alpine Study Club will host a talk by the University of New Mexico astronomy department titled Is the Sky the Limit at 8 p.m. on Tuesday September 15 in the Alpine Center. A Brunswick stew supper will be served from 6 to 8 p.m. Proceeds fund a nursing scholarship. Tickets are available at three drug stores or from Study Club members. Colonel Forbes stationed at Sandia Base in Albuquerque is expected to join Sul Ross State University after retirement in two years.
