Sul Ross College opened the fall term with the largest postwar attendance, as registrations show nearly 400 upperclassmen and about 200 freshmen by Wednesday afternoon. Officials expect total enrollment around 275 to 300 freshmen and 450 to 475 upper-level students plus about 150 graduates. All housing is filled and some students are in off-campus housing.
Janice Ruth McKay of College Park Maryland enrolled this week at Sul Ross College the alma mater of her father Dr John Welborn McKay a horticulturist for the U S Department of Agriculture Beltsville Maryland one of Sul Ross early graduates Her sisters Vera and Virgie McKay also attended the college after his influence She studied at Western Maryland College one year and the University of Maryland one semester before joining Sul Ross as a biology major.
Mayor Hugh White of Alpine is elected first vice president of the Permian Basin Area council of the Girl Scouts. J. M. Waddell of Kermit becomes council president with Thornton Hardie Jr. of Midland as second vice president and Mrs. Gerald McGuire of Kermit as secretary. The council’s Fern Canyon camp lies 13 miles north of Alpine in Jeff Davis County.
Mrs Rebecca M Roberts of San Antonio died after months of illness. Mrs Press Nichols and her husband attended the service in Tyler with survivors including son W R Roberts Sr of Galveston brother Marsh Love of Chilton and two grandsons.
Sul Ross state team of 35 leaves for El Paso for the season opener against Texas Western Miners. The lineup includes seven lettermen and four transfers Ed Berridge Earnest Mendoza Richard Stanfield and Al Ausmus. Juries are few and the Lobos schedule Corpus Christi University at home on September 25.
Alpine Bucks overpower Sanderson Eagles 31 to 0 on Alpine High field in the season opener. McGaughy and Hernandez star as Bucks move the ball, while Sanderson struggles with 4 of 16 passes and 6 first downs. Several players shine on both sides as Alpine braces for McCamey game.

A Saturday service at the American Legion hall installed 1955 officers for American Legion Big Bend Post No. 79 and its Auxiliary. New Legion officers include Thomas L. Coats as commander and Jeff Graham as first vice commander. Auxiliary officers feature Mrs. Thomas L. Coats as president and Mrs. Sammie Snure as first vice president. Over 100 members and guests enjoyed a buffet supper before the installation, with remarks from installing officer W. G. Abbott of Midland.
A Florida visitor mailed a nickel for parking and praised Alpine police and merchants. The note on Perrin Thomp son Groves stationery from Winter Haven thanked Alpine for courtesy and called the city a fine place. Police and officials say such expressions are common.
The public is invited to see the film African Safari shown by the Big Bend Sports mens club at the county courthouse next Tuesday Sept 21 at 7 30 p m. No admission is charged and all sportsmen and others are urged to attend.
Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Lehman become the Valerie Fashion shop’s new owners effective Monday. The Lehmans, seven years residents of Los Alamos New Mexico, will run the store under the same name from the Winter apartment on East Holland Ave. George Koury and wife, long-time operators since 1937, will remain in Alpine and will continue city affairs involvement.
The San Angelo Standard-Times recalls 400 two year-olds and 150 three year-olds bought by Jackson & Harmon from L. B. Caruthers and others, with cows at $16 a head and calves $6 each. Jim P. Wilson of Alpine sold steers to Wiley Moore of Marfa, and S. D. Harmon, nearly 92, remains the last living link to the era alongside J. D. Jackson's family in Alpine. Trade with the home merchant Buy in Alpine.
Fort Davis will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Jeff Davis Lodge No. 896 on Sept 24 at Point of Rocks with a picnic supper at 6 pm. Members families and guests from the lodge and the Eastern Star will participate. Roy Kelley leads the lodge with wardens June McNew and Jack Rusk. H M Fennell of Marfa may give a short historical review.
A Hill Burton grant of 200000 dollars is approved for a Brewster county hospital contingent on a 200000 bond issue election set for October 2. Dr George Turner of El Paso and Gen Dean Winn support the plan and a public meeting will be held with Winn invited to discuss the project.
Fort Davis selects Herbert D. Smith as the new Fort Davis school superintendent overseeing 254 pupils. Smith, born in East Texas, served as a wartime PE instructor with the Fourth Air Force and earned degrees from East Texas Baptist College and Sul Ross College. He and his wife June Gottholt live in Fort Davis with daughter Kathleen, and he active in local civic life including coaching for the Indian Emily pageant.
Mr and Mrs C C Chism purchased the George Faber residence built and formerly owned by R G Crowder on the North Loop road. Mr Chism becomes Southern Pacific roadmaster here succeeding W Shaw who recently retired. The family includes a daughter in high school two in Lobe school and a son in the service.
The Sul Ross Lobos arrive for the 1954 season with optimism as they face Texas Western in El Paso. Coach Al Milch leads a larger squad now down to about 45. standout backs Norman Cash and Ray McGregar anchor a deep backfield with 13 tackles and four first-rate guards forming the line. The Lobos' schedule includes 11 straight Saturday games against Corpus Christi, New Mexico A&M, Sam Houston, Southwest Texas State, and others, beginning tomorrow.
Dallas Southwestern Medical Foundation announced Dick Rogers president of the First National Bank Alpine will represent Brewster County on the advisory council for the coming year. The council spans most Texas counties with plans to broaden to Louisiana Oklahoma and New Mexico.
The Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers' Association will hold its fourth quarterly meeting in Junction on Saturday Sept. 18. President Walter Pfluger of Eden announces the gathering to include producers from Kimbell and nearby counties. Topics include new legislation affecting wool and mohair growers next year. Committees and the general meeting take place at Junction High School.
Southwestern Bell seeks local rate increases with a public hearing set for October 8. Gilbert A. Eimann says higher costs necessitate higher charges for two party, one party residence, and business lines while promising continued value and lower daily costs for service.
Two residences are being built. One for Mr. and Mrs. D. D. Thomas on the North loop road outside the city limits is a six room Roman brick structure with paneling. The Davis home for Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Davis sits on N. 11th St. and W. Ave. A, a two bedroom wood and asbestos sided dwelling. Ralph W. Peters of Alpine is the Thomas residence contractor.
Fort Davis correspondent Bar ry Scobee won a $10 bonus from the San Angelo Standard Times editor for his August story on the Bloys camp meeting titled The Gathering of the Clans. The story, written before the meeting opened, stood out among 63 town correspondents.
Dalene Isbell infant daughter of Mr and Mrs Larry Isbell died last Thursday in Canada one day after birth and was buried in Waco Tuesday morning. Isbell a former Baylor U football star and Alpine Cowboy baseball player now plays pro football with Regina Saskatchewan in the Canadian Professional league.
The Alpine Ministerial Alliance of Protestant and Catholic pastors passed a resolution at its regular meeting urging county support for a new hospital. The move reflects broad religious backing for improving regional healthcare.
The Plymouth Oil Co drill on H. L. Kobernot & Son ranch in Jeff Davis county reached a depth of 8482 feet this week. The terrain is Montoya lime and chert about 25 miles north of Alpine.
Mack Strinefellow seven won high honors as a second grader at Central School after six weeks at Camp Stewart near Kerrville. He earned the best camper trophy in the midget division, an AAU certificate, riflery medal, Red Cross swimming track and diving ribbons, and was high point individual in his division.
