David Newell, 17, denied enrollment at Alpine High due to hair length beyond the district dress code, has enrolled as a freshman at Sul Ross State University after passing a special entrance exam. His father cited special circumstances, noting the band Lynx and long hair as professional requirements. the Alpine School Board had barred him at a August hearing.

Southern Pacific will cut Alpine passenger service to three days a week starting Oct 1 unless strong opposition emerges. A notice posted Aug 31 urged objections to the ICC at least 15 days before Oct 16. Eastbound trains depart LA for New Orleans Tue Fri Sat, arriving Alpine 11 16 p.m. Westbound departures mirror schedule with arrivals 9 25 a.m. in Alpine. Kenneth Stucke, Alpine Chamber of Commerce president, said a Sept 9 board meeting may oppose the cut and send resolutions to the ICC and Texas Railroad Commission. Sleeping and dining cars on the Sunset trains may be restored concurrently.

Alpine Council Debates Water Plan and Ordinance Change
Alpine City Council discussed HUD grant plans to drill two new wells and study Musquiz water sources with a hydrological analysis.
