Budget committee visits SRU on campus budget tour

A joint legislative hearing delegation toured Sul Ross State University in Alpine to review and gather data on the 1971-73 budget request. The committee from the Legislative Budget Board and Governor's Budget Board, plus staff, met with SRU President Norman L. McNeil and comptroller John C ilson to assess funding needs for state colleges.

Police renew war on dogs in Alpine

The Alpine Police Department launches day and night patrols to seize stray dogs without city license and rabies tags. Strays will be taken to the pound and held for owner identification or destroyed if unclaimed. All city dogs must wear collars with valid tags.

Spanish classes offered at Alpine Community Center

Spanish classes will start at the Alpine Community Center on Tuesday September 15. Two courses run Sept 15 through Dec 15, beginner 5 to 7 p.m. and intermediate 7 to 9 p.m. Instructor is Mrs. Robert M Williams. Fee is 8 dollars. For information call 837-2387 or 837-3260. Alpine Bucks Kick Off 1970 Season With Scrimmage Wins

Alpine High School’s Bucks, after three weeks of prep, head to McCamey for the season opener. In a recent Buck Stadium scrimmage against Pecos High, Alpine totaled 600 offensive yards and five TDs while holding Pecos scoreless with 74 rushing yards allowed. Alpine completed 2 of 9 passes for 57 yards, reaching 657 total yards.

Alpine enrollments hit city record at 1304 students

Alpine public schools totaled 1304 on Wednesday, up nine from September 26. Alpine High School had 398 students, junior high 213, and elementary 693, with the year-end 1969-70 total at 1282 and a 1295 mark in August 1970 noted.

Alpine Board OKs maintenance bills and bus reimbursements

Alpine Independent School District approved 26688.52 in maintenance costs at a Tuesday board meeting. Of this, 4973.51 covered accounts payable from 1969 70. Patrons are reimbursed for private student transportation since no district bus system exists. The panel also paid Oasis Builders 48413.70 for Central Elementary work, 10 percent withheld until inspection.

Bucks suffer fumbles as Pecos battles to a loss

In a rough game Pecos fumbled four times while the Bucks dropped the ball twice. Guillermo Gonzales scored three Bucks touchdowns and Juan Llanez added the remaining scores as the teams traded drives and yardage throughout the contest.
