Sul Ross Students Arrive as Alpine Schools Report 1295 Enrollees

Alpine public schools list 1 295 pupils attending on Wednesday the third day of term, up from 1 282 at last year’s close. Alpine School’s attendance was 396, eight more than the 388 final figure last year. Grade by grade tallies show various adjustments across end of term, August 24, and August 26 readings.

Park School to Open in Big Bend National Park

San Vicente School in Big Bend National Park will open at 8 30 a m Monday Aug 31. Teachers will be J C Anderson and Mrs B B Baker. Jan Morrow daughter of Mr and Mrs Keith Morrow will leave Sept 10 to enter Smith College Northhampton Mass where she will be a freshman.

Odessa firm bids low on Avenue E project

Highway Construction Co Inc of Odessa was the low bidder at 277,616.80 for the Avenue E reconstruction from Apricot Street to U S 90. Bids opened in Austin on Tuesday August 25 by the Texas Highway Commission. The contract could be awarded next week with work to begin in 2 to 6 weeks. The project spans 1.533 miles and will take 4 to 5 months, routing eastbound traffic on Holland Avenue and westbound on Avenue E.

Connor urges publication of city finances report

Councilman Tom M. Connor pushes to resume annual publication of the city finances in The Avalanche. The motion died for lack of a second as absent members and mayor questioned legal necessity and timing. Connor pledged further effort to restore the former publication practice.

Relatives Visit Lt Newsom in San Antonio Home

Mrs. Ray Newsom and Mrs. Wallace Sublett visited in San Antonio over the weekend to meet 2nd Lt. Philip A. Newsom, grandson of Mrs. Newsom. Lt. Newsom was on a cross country flight to California for navigation school and was hosted by his mother Mrs. Philip Newsom. Also present were Lt. Alan Newsom, his wife and son.

Folklorist Dr Mody Boatright Dies at 73

Funeral services were held for Dr Mody C Boatright 73 in Austin after his death August 20 from a heart attack at an Abilene hospital. A noted folklorist and longtime UT English professor emeritus, he taught at Sul Ross State University 1923 1926 and UT 1926 1969. He is survived by his widow Betty Keefer, daughter Mrs Ernest Speck, son Mody Keefer Boatright, nine grandchildren and siblings.

Registration Opens For Fall At Sul Ross State University

Sul Ross State University prepares for a record fall enrollment after registering begins Monday August 31 at Wildenthal Memorial Library. About 150 football players band members and cheerleaders are on campus as orientation events start with a reception at President Norman McNeils home and a backyard dinner August 28.

Mr and Mrs Otis Kimball and grandson Monty accompany him to Texas A M Tuesday as he begins as a freshman His father starts Monday at Texas Tech in Lubbock and Joe heads Friday to West Texas State University in Canyon The Kimballs are the parents of Keesey Kimball and Jimmy Pattillo son of John Pattillo who won the Gulf Scholarship to Texas A M and will enroll as a freshman.

Lobos Open Fall Practice At Sul Ross State

Ninety five players report for the start of fall drills under head coach Richard Harvey at Sul Ross State University. The turnout includes 42 returning lettermen from a 4-5-1 1969 squad and 53 newcomers seeking spots on the 1970 team. Harvey says four daily practices will continue this week and notes some lettermen arrived overweight but expect improvement after warm weather drills. An intra squad scrimmage is tentatively set for Saturday night.
