Dr. Ross A. Maxwell director of Big Bend National Park told Big Bend Trail association delegates in Alpine that park construction is a 124 year program based on annual appropriations. He cited $458,704 in five years, $181,314 this year with $58,200 for improvements, and a planned $14 million program. He urged lawmakers to back the National Park Service appropriation, noting visitor numbers grew from 2,564 to 40,974. The meeting, part of the Big Bend Trail pilgrimage along U. S. 67, elected new officers Gordon Kenley, Paul Counts, C. S. Peyton, and M. D. Fanning.
J T Jack Johnson was named Chief of Police for Alpine by the City Commission and assumed duty last Saturday after resigning from Casner Motor Co. He succeeds Gilbert Bell who left to rejoin the Texas Department of Public Safety. Johnson urges citizen support for efficient and impartial policing. Bud Chamberlain becomes chief deputy sheriff of Brewster County, replacing Price Rackley who resigned.

Taxes payable through January 31 and delinquent February 1. poll taxes do not receive discounts.

Alpine Bucks roll over Fabens Wildcats 27 to 0 on Fabens home field in the fourth conference game of 1948. Marfa Shorthorns lead, Alpine tied for first after win. standings show Sanderson and Fabens multiple losses as the Bucks eye a pivotal matchup with Sanderson on November 5 in Alpine. The season ends with a Armistice Day matchup at Jackson Field.

A. R. Williams captain of game wardens was accidentally shot in the right leg last Thursday night while inspecting a car linked to two men arrested for hunting with spotlights. A 30 caliber bullet through the seat cushion struck him between hip and knee. injuries not serious. The accident occurred in Wild Rose pass Jeff Davis county after the men were arrested and brought to a justice of the peace. the men paid fines and Williams said he would be unable to move quickly for several days.

Harold A King a longtime Fort Davis resident and pioneer auto dealer died of a heart attack at his home Saturday. A three week past 75, he lived alone, had served with the Texas Rangers and as a Federal Reserve guard in El Paso, and ran the town’s prominent garage and photography business across the road from the county courthouse. He left no known survivors.
Brewster county voters head to polls next Tuesday November 2 to cast choices for precinct county state and national offices. The eight column ballot is about 17 by 22 inches and lists eight party columns with mixed candidate slates and one non political redistricting amendment SJR 2. Polling places Presiding Judges and election officials are noted for Precinct West East 1 2 3 4 and a Big National Park box location with detailed officials.
Paisano Baptist encampment plans a new 2000-seat auditorium at a cost near 150000 dollars. San Antonio architect Will N Noonan outlined a building with auditorium choir loft balcony lobby rest rooms two wings each with two classrooms connected by folding doors. Construction would be concrete with a lamella roof and tar interlayers. The building committee will receive drawings for study and approval.
