Rodeo Teams of the Past to Be Honored at Sul Ross Homecoming

Sul Ross State College honors former rodeo performers during homecoming Friday and Saturday. Special recognition for national championship teams from 1949 to 1962. Events include bonfire, pep rally, assembly with Gene Hendryx, parade from Alpine High School, homecoming queen presentation, barbecue, and dances for students and ex-students.

Historical Sites to Be Dedicated in Brewster County

A Sunday dedication program at Sul Ross College in Alpine features official Texas historical markers for the City of Alpine and seven historic buildings. Rev. Edwin Chappell opens with invocation as Hugh S. White introduces guests. Hallie Stillwell and Mrs. Maude Baines present histories and medallions for sites including First Methodist Church and Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church.

Fort Davis Hosts Texas History Group Weekend Tour

A large Texas State Historical Survey Committee group will visit Fort Davis after the Odessa meeting on Oct 28 29. They plan trips to McKittrick Canyon Monahans Sandhills Park and Fort Davis with observatory viewing Prude Ranch barbecue and a Warnock lecture. Sunday includes a devotional at the fort ruins and a guided historical tour led by Supt. Franklin Smith Ranger Bob Crisman and Ben Levy.

Death Takes Alonzo Hord

Alonzo Hord, 60, Alpine Civil Defense director for three years, died Oct. 27 at his home. Funeral services set for 2:30 p.m. Friday at First Methodist Church with Rev. Edwin Chappell. Elm Grove Cemetery graveside rites by Alpine Masonic Lodge. Born Oct. 9, 1905 in Alpine. he ran the Motor Inn for 28 years and belonged to the Methodist Church Masonic Lodge and helped found the Big Bend Sportman's Club. Survived by wife Ethel and brother Clarance, both of Alpine.

Scouts to Seek UNICEF Aid on Halloween Night

Local Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts from several churches will go door to door on Saturday night October 30 seeking aid for UNICEF. Donations help feed and supply medical care for underprivileged children worldwide. Scouts collecting will carry UNICEF bookmarks as recognition for contributors.

Arlington student among victims in Marathon crash

Sul Ross College sophomore Jackie McMillan of Arlington died four hours after a collision with a Southern Pacific freight engine east of Marathon Saturday night. Four Sul Ross students in the northbound 1965 sedan were injured, including Shaw Skinner. Daniels, Fleming, and Luce suffered serious injuries with various fractures and head wounds. Funeral services were held in Sweetwater. Police reported the crash occurred at 10:42 p.m. and that other occupants helped provide first aid.

Carlsbad Group Plans Big Bend goodwill tour itinerary

More than 75 Carlsbad New Mexico civic and business leaders visit Big Bend Country for a two day goodwill trip. They breakfast in Pecos, tour Alpine and Big Bend National Park, dine at Alpine Country Club, then head to Fort Davis for a Lions Club barbecue lunch.
