Alpine to Modernize Old Bowling Alley Into City Hall
City of Alpine officials expect to occupy a rebuilt municipal building by Feb 1 1970 after approving a Bright Construction Co contract to convert the old bowling alley at Avenue D and 7th Street into a comprehensive city offices and a large meeting room. The project, first bid at 65 642 was reduced to 57 890 and should take about 90 days to complete. The city bought the building May 6 1969 for 17 500.

Al Sanchez Killed in Car-Truck Collision Near Fort Davis
Al Sanchez 45 owner of Casa Blanca Cafe died in a crash on U S 118 about six miles south of Fort Davis when his car collided with a cattle truck headed toward Alpine. He was born October 15 1924 in Alpine a WWII veteran and survived by his wife Pamela a son Knobby a sister Margaret Moreno and two brothers. Rosary and funeral rites were held at local Catholic churches and graveside services conducted by Veterans groups with a VFW color guard and American Legion firing squad.

Council declines to fill spot to succeed Rojo
Tuesday the council chose not to appoint a new councilman to succeed Alberto Rojo and will reelect the official next April. The appointee would serve one year. The meeting also granted Joe Davidson's request to designate parking in front of the Granada Theater with red curb on the east side and yellow loading zone toward the west, removing a parking meter in front of Shepperd Jewelers. Nellie Mae Mc Elroy and T A Beard were named to the Home Rule Study Committee.

Wildenthal Library Dedication Friday Ceremonies Held
Dedication for the Bryan Wildenthal Memorial Library to be occupied in August will take place Friday at 10 30 a m on the entrance patio. Dr Leland Derrick of Southwest Texas State University will speak. Invitations have been sent to Wildenthal family regents state leaders librarians and educators. Dr Wildenthal led Sul Ross as its fifth president beginning in 1952 and later held roles at San Angelo College and SWT. Dr Derrick has led SWT twice as president and has chaired multiple education associations.

Annual Carnival Is Postponed At Alpine High School
Alpine High School suspends its Halloween Carnival this year due to the Bucks away trip and Sul Ross Homecoming events. The carnival will occur next spring. The Bucks travel to Eunice New Mexico on Halloween night. Sul Ross Homecoming is set for November 1. The 3rd Annual Chili Cook-off is also planned for Terlingua on November 1.

Wildcat Drilling Planned in Brewster County Texas
Duncan Sartain and partners of San Angelo seek to drill a 3500 foot wildcat in Brewster County about 40 miles southeast of Marathon. The well, No 1 Frank Lasater, sits 1980 feet from the west line and 660 feet from the north line of 139 G1 DWRR.
