Musical Majority to Tour USO Stations From Sul Ross

Fifteen Sul Ross State University singers join a Pacific Command USO tour beginning today for eight weeks. The group represents the typical college student and will perform in Taiwan Korea Japan Thailand Okinawa Hawaii and the Philippines. Split Highway Plans Continue

The Texas Highway Department advances plans to convert U S 90 into two one way roadways. A public hearing was held in Alpine and the project is reviewed in Austin with 50 percent financing by the Bureau of Public Roads. The reroute would send eastbound traffic on Holland Avenue and westbound on reconstructed Avenue E.

Alpine Board Adopts Drug Policy and Class Plan Change

Tuesday night the Alpine School Board granted administration power to suspend students for illegal drug use, declined dress code action, and approved a 15 classroom unit plan with one special education class at the Junior High. TEA checks found no race discrimination. The district will pay $600 for a trailer and approve bills totaling $39,932.67.

Nine Rodeo Events Set at Sul Ross 24th Annual NIRA Rodeo

The 24th Sul Ross NIRA Rodeo opens at 7 30 p m tonight October 16 with nine events over four days. Men compete in bareback bull riding saddle bronc calf roping and bulldogging while cowgirls enter barrel racing breakaway roping and goat tying with a three woman calf dressing contest as a special event. College teams from Texas Oklahoma and New Mexico expected. Sul Ross riders earned honors at ENMU meet earlier this month with Roy Clement of Dalhart winning the All Around saddle and calf and ribbon roping titles. Charlie Stewart of Uvalde high placed in goat tying barrel racing while wife and partner Mrs Stewart scored in goat tying and barrel racing. Clint Barber and Jack Ward posted high scores in saddle bronc and bull riding respectively.

Air Tour Stops Here in Alpine for 21st Annual Tour

About 49 airplanes descended on Alpine Tuesday for the 21st Annual Tour of All-Texas air tours through Saturday. Roughly 125 pilots with companions visited Alpine Municipal Airport and were taken to motels by Sul Ross University buses. Planes came from Illinois, Oklahoma, Michigan, Maryland, Missouri, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Texas. A reception for flyers was held Tuesday night at the Highland Motor Inn.

Governors' Meet Is Postponed on Inter National Bridge

Governors Preston Smith of Texas and Oscar Flores of Chihuahua postpone the inter national bridge meeting at Presidio Ojinaga scheduled for Friday October 17. A mimeographed statement from the Governor Day Committee says both offices announced the postponement and a new date will be set later. The delay appears linked to Operation Intercept.
