Big Pat Hazen and Sal Ross shine as Abilene Christian defeats the Lobos 13 to 6 in Abilene. Lobo rally falls short after trailing 13–0 at halftime as Hazen and the Wildcats dominate the second half on long drives and reverses.
Local officials reported final totals from the Alpine Lions event show a net Lions share of 63.60 with the Lions club receiving 53.60 after expenses. The Alpine organization arranged publicity and advertising for the band's appearance drawing 192 college students and nearly 300 other attendees as they toured after performing in Chicago and other cities.
Alpine installs a police telephone at the former Taxi News stand location with a large bell at the Border Service station. Officers can answer calls day or night for rapid contact, aiding in preventing escapes after crimes and keeping residents informed of police activity.
Alpine residents await the PT A Halloween carnival on October 31 starting at six in the evening with a parade of school children in costumes and booths featuring fortune tellers balloons confetti and a variety of foods and entertainments. The event includes two dances a story hour at the Holland hotel and a football game potential doubleheader with Alpine and a neighboring town. Local women have organized activities and there is emphasis on electing a queen and princesses for the festivities. Dignitaries Mr and Mrs Carl Hegelund visited en route to Phoenix reflecting local community ties.
The Lobos face a tough stretch with two road games this week starting with Daniel Baker in San Angelo and then Kingsville in Corpus Christi. Texas A and I has shown strong form, leading the eastern TI AA with wins over San Marcos and East Texas Teachers after a 7 0 win over the Bobcats and a 7 6 victory over Fast Texas.
Alpine faces Sanderson in a return game aiming to reverse a 6 0 loss from earlier season. Buck lineup changes due to injuries include Murray, Gay Hares, and Allen. two strong games loom against Valeta and Marta Leven as Highland district play continues. J D Jackson, Sam Harmon, and W A Weakley report good ranges in Van Horn country.
District game wardens warn hunters to observe a federal rule restricting the duck season to one month, opening nationwide on November 16 instead of October 16. The Texas law aligns with this change, with a noon opening on opening day. Violators face federal court, and migratory birds may be hunted from sunrise to sunset.
Publishers and editors from Big Bend papers will attend a chamber of commerce luncheon at the Holland hotel at 12 30 pm Monday to discuss regional advertising and cooperation. Attendees include TC Meek Marfa John Hart Pres to Journal Marvin Hunter Fort Davis Jack Mawkins Pecos W E Reid Fort Stockton Jas H Walker Balmorhea Addie Lee Lemons Bolling D Bennett Alpine Avanche. Also, dairyman H W Burgess and his daughter Betty Jane escaped injury after a Southern Pacific freight backed into their milk truck near the depot Friday night with minor damages and sprains.
A current year report notes 79 parents attended the Alpine Parent-Teacher group meeting. A drive for new members is underway, aiming to add about twenty more before the next session. Miss LaMaryls Wall led a discussion on the progress of the club and the Children A round-table addressed local problems.
Several Apne women could not be timed last week yet won prizes in the Marfa fair chiefly in quilt and fancy work. Alpine entries appeared in exhibits. Winners include Mrs Vernon McIntyre first for Inch set and third for bridge set. Mrs A Brown second for afghans. Mrs R C Elliott second. Anja Wilson first for bridge set. Henry Espinosa first in oil paintings. Juliette Forchheimer second in oil paintings and honored in china painting and drawings plus cut-outs by Janette MeIntyre. Mrs E R Cox won first in hand painted china. Mrs Earl Scudday of Del Rio visits relatives this week.
Sul Ross College football faces the favored Daniel Baker Hillbillies in a key conference game in San Angelo tomorrow afternoon. Graves plans new early attack on the Hillbillies after their win over Canyon. The Lobos will rely on fast, shifty players and Pop Warner style plays to surprise the heavy Prairie Presbyterians. Green, a threshing back, is expected to see more action as the Lobos seek a late season boost.
Father Brocardus, Belgian native and longtime Fort Davis priest, aged 76, has been relieved from his post after 49 years of service. He left for El Paso and Las Cruces recently. His tenure once extended over six counties and he influenced the church’s present building replacing the 19th century chapel.
Report cards show only six seniors achieved straight A grades in four subjects for the first six weeks. Audrey Lewis Mildred Matthews and Mrs Isabel Yates earned the high honor. Boudreaux and Alex held sophomore status. no juniors on list. Examinations completed last week with high records expected to improve next term.
Brewster county Red Cross directors met with Mrs. Cora Goodwin in Alpine to map the annual membership drive from November 11 to Thanksgiving Day. Appointments were made for Marathon Study Butte and Terlingua, with Leitha Chaffin new secretary and A. F. Robinson chairing disaster and home relief committees.
Carl Williams and A B Braggent of Marfa recently purchased the Casner Motor Company owned bus line running from Alpine to Presidio via Marfa. The two men commence ownership of the regional transport link.
Contracts awarded for a new Alpine hospital at Sixth Street near the courthouse. Dr. J B Wright leases the building site from R A Menturry, with Storey Whiteside as general contractor and McMurry Plumbing handling fixtures. Completion aimed for January first, with turnover in about 40 to 50 days. The $7500 project includes a basement five feet deep and a one and a half story tall structure, featuring a separate isolation room with outside access.
Alpine club members from Marfa Sanderson and Alpine Rotary clubs met in Sanderson last Friday deeming the inter-city gathering the district’s most successful event. Attendance was modest with four Alpine members and guests Billy Devine and wife Felix Mes Gaurhy and wife Bob McMurry. Marfa sent a solid delegation and the program featured the U S Army band, and plans were announced to hold similar meetings regularly in the district.
J A Holt former Gillett Brown employee buys the Odessa variety store from Ernest Metinney who had run it for the past year. Holt and his wife moved to Odessa last week and taken residence here.
