Marfa Fair closes after four days with cattle and poultry contests
The fourth annual Migniana fair in Marfa ended Saturday as 1,800 attended the Miners of El Paso versus Lobos of Alpine football game. Exhibits from Jeff Davis Presidio and Brewster counties featured cattle, poultry, produce and crafts. Cattle sales averaged 238 for bulls and 135 for females. top bull sold for 800. Feeder sale attracted out-of-state buyers. champion steer calves fetched 940. Poultry shows awarded eleven firsts among Alpine exhibitors. Rains brought scattered moisture across ranches, with notable rainfall near Meriwether, Kennedy, Davidson and Kokernot ranges aiding drought-stricken ranges. The Alpine area remains the driest part of the Big Bend.

Diaz Given Five Years in State Penitentiary
Jose Diaz a Alpine Mexican was sentenced to five years in the state penitentiary after pleading guilty to highway robbery during a special district court session called by Judge Sutton. Diaz held up Sidney Miller near Mrs. Gertrude Moss' home on August 30 taking a watch knife change and keys before his arrest and transfer to the penitentiary.

Cattle shipments slow in Brewster Big Bend region
Annual fall shipments of cattle and sheep from Brewster county and the Big Bend are well below par as ranchers hold stock for better prices. In six weeks Alpine shipped only about 80 cars, far under last year, with expectations of added activity in early November. Marathon Girl Succumbs Here
Miss Bessie Granger, known as Marathon Girl, died at Turney hospital at 7 p.m. Tuesday after a lingering illness. She had lived in Marathon most of her life and was born July 16, 1906, age 25. Funeral services were held there Wednesday at 5 p.m. Alpine Mate reports no further details at press time.

County Jail Empty For First Time In Two Years

Barking Dog Saves Lives In College Avenue Fire
