City Acts to Remedy Water Supply After Health Dept Findings
City officials moved quickly after negative health department reports on the water supply. Wells not feeding directly into reservoirs were chlorinated and retested, with all samples returning satisfactory results. Engineer R H Weiss from the State Health Dept visited for a meeting with the commission and health officer Dr J E Wright to discuss safeguarding the city’s water, with continued testing and safeguards planned.

Fifth St Building to Be Renovated in Alpine
Exterior work begins this week on the two story Fifth Street building owned by Mrs. C G Morrison and C G Beeson Co. The Alpine landmark, part of a block acquired from the Jim P Wilson estate, once housed a drug store and the post office. The corner building formerly occupied by Houghtons is also being renovated for a new business, with Chas C Cowell as contractor.

Big Bend Lions To Get Charter In Remote Park Event
Eight district governors from Texas and two from northern Mexico plan to attend the Council of Governors of Lions International and Charter Night for a new Lions club in Big Bend National Park on October 30. The outdoor barbecue and program will feature 34 charter members spread over 125 miles with leaders from Texas and Mexico.

Alpine Woman and Child Hurt In Auto Crash Near Garland
Mrs. M. A. Buhler was seriously injured with both arms and knee caps damaged in a head on collision on a farm to market road near Dallas. Her four year old grandson Rex Charles Crawford suffered a severe head cut and was later released. Mrs. Crawford and one year old Bruce had minor injuries. Mr. Crawford, Alpine high school principal, and Mrs. Guy B. Crawford were in Dallas with others after the crash.

Alpine Volunteer Fire Dept. adds a 1942 Ford crash truck donated by ranchman Bill Sohl. Stored at the old army airfield since WWII, it needs about 100 in repairs to run. The department already has four pieces of equipment and seeks a modern fire station.

Test Shows Gas At Alpine Ranch Drilling Site
Plymouth Oil Co. reports a one hour 15 minute test on the H. L. Kokernot & Son ranch 25 miles north of Alpine. From 10,230 to 10,258 ft the drill stem test yielded 2,400 ft of slightly gas cut muddy fresh water. The test planned to drill to 11,500 ft. Mr and Mrs Loyd Henderson were to visit Denver and Lowry AFB for their son Gary.

Marathon Nips Fort Davis In 23 22 District 5 B thriller
Marathon High School edged Fort Davis High 23 22 in a six man District 5 B game. Fort Davis safety and a late touchdown gave Marathon the lead in the final period. Fullback Johnny Granados scored for Fort Davis with a 12 yard run and a 74 yard run setting up another. Ernest Rivera added two conversions. Marathon led 14 14 at halftime.

Highway Meeting in Big Bend Park Discusses U 51 Route
Members of the U S Highway 51 Association met in Big Bend National Park to plan designation and completion of the road from the Canadian border to the Rio Grande. The highway is paved from McCamey north through Odessa Brownfield and Dalhart, then crosses Oklahoma Colorado Nebraska and the Dakotas. The association formed in Texas in 1937 with Alpine participants and Glenn Burgess of Alpine as its first president.

Alpine High hosted Del Rio in a rough matchup that ended 14 to 6 after three quarters of 6 0 and a late deficit. Hearings on removing T and N O railroad terminal facilities from Valentine and Sanderson to Alpine were reopened in Sanderson after a Sanderson and Valentine resident request. Mail Box Rifled Near Post Office Overnight
Postmaster B. B. West reports the mail box in front of the post office was pried open during the night Monday and several letters, including some with checks, were taken. Some opened letters were found in a second box on Holland Ave Tuesday morning. The box was intact until about 9 p.m. and believed opened around 11 p.m. No verified value recovered.

Graveside services were held at Elm Grove cemetery for John F. Colwell aged 92 who died Monday at his home near Alpine. A life long ranchman born Sept 16 1862 in Kerr County he owned extensive ranching interests in West Texas. Survived by widow four children twenty one grandchildren and twenty six great grandchildren.
