Boles Assigned as Quarantine Inspector in Alpine

Tom C. Boles, quarantine inspector for the Bureau of Animal Industry, has been transferred to Alpine from Hachita New Mexico joining Aaron Green. Accompanying Mr Boles to Alpine were his wife and two daughters Christine 14 and Betty 12.

Sul Ross Lobos seek their first conference win after three straight losses to Texas colleges. City leases rail property for five years at $100 a month

Alpine city secures Southern Pacific right of way along Avenue between 5th and 6th Streets for auto parking. Mayor Hugh White said parking meters may be installed later to justify the lease and benefit nearby businesses. Earlier, the railroad canceled a lease to Humble Oil between 6th and 7th Streets. merchants on Holland between 5th and 6th may be offered spaces at nominal cost.

Alpine school calendar shifts Thanksgiving to Nov 29

Alpine Board of Trustees approved delaying Thanksgiving observance from Nov 22 to Nov 29. Schools will dismiss Nov 28 and reopen Dec 3 at the usual times. The board’s next meeting is scheduled for the night of Nov 13.

Eisenhower Campaign Headquarters Opened on Holland Avenue

Eisenhower for President headquarters opened near the hotel coffee shop on Holland Avenue to serve Brewster County voters. E Milton Smith coordinates the Brewster Republican committee while John W Gillett chairs Brewster Democrats for Eisenhower with Mrs T L Coats as campaign headquarters chairman. Big Bend TV Co sponsored a television set for the office.

Newsom to be Honored at Kansas City Show

Frank Newsom county agent for Brewster and Jeff Davis counties will join nine other agents and agriculture instructors honored by the American Hereford Association at the American Royal Livestock Show in Kansas City next week. He is slated to attend the Diamond Jubilee banquet Monday night October 22 and other events during the week for his contributions to beef cattle improvement.

Mr and Mrs Hal Burnett will travel to Midland Saturday for a district Commandery gathering and then proceed to East Texas The Alpine Commandery will confer the Order of the Temple degree.

Dr James Hill Pioneer Thyroid Surgeon Dies at 84

Dr James A Hill 84 a pioneer in American thyroid surgery died at 7 50 pm Tuesday in Alpine Hospital after three weeks illness He retired in 1953 and lived in Alpine with his niece Miss Sarah Hill and nephew Dr Malone Hill A service was held in St James Episcopal Church Interment in Glenwood Cemetery Houston He helped found Memorial Hospital and served as chief of surgery He led thyroidectomies from 1930 to 1953 and was honored with a plaque at retirement Survivors include two sisters and several nieces and nephews

Big Bend Rains Benefit Range and Roads Damage

Beneficial rains up to five inches spread across the Big Bend and Davis Mountain country boosting winter grass for cattle and sheep. Yet highways and rails were washed out with a stretch of U S 90 closed between Dryden and Comstock and a Santa Fe track washout near Fort Stockton to McCamey. Cattle shipments have been heavy, with about 150 carloads moved by Santa Fe since Oct 1 while ranches report various moisture gains and some fence and structure damage.

Alpine Artist's Oil Painting Donated to Sul Ross

Dr. George Turner of El Paso donated an oil painting titled Ocotillo by Alpine artist Mrs. John Stowell to Sul Ross State College. The work, a Big Bend scene with ocotillo in bloom, was selected by a faculty committee and hung in the Student Union Building after Turner spoke at the last August commencement.

Last Rites Held For Lynn Forbes

Funeral services were held in Artesia New Mexico for Lynn Forbes longtime Avalanche publisher who died last week in Hobbs New Mexico at age 48 He led the Avalanche in Alpine before moving to Hobbs His death followed a heart attack and burial was in Woodbine Cemetery Artesia He was born in Branson Missouri and lived in Texas before joining the family newspaper business He was married to Nellie Ruth Yeats and they had two sons Jerry and Don The obituary notes his mother sisters and a brother and mentions Charley Gibson Republican candidate for Congress will visit Alpine Monday.

Black Gap Hunt Opens Challenge in Brewster County

Tom Moore announces the Black Gap hunt in Brewster County offers a challenge with a 50 mule deer and 50 javelina harvest planned for December 8 to 13. Applications due by October 31, minimum 17, groups up to four, two day options, free shoot with a $2.15 license. Area lies east of Dead Horse range near Marathon with camping and provided transportation. Wildlife includes mountain lions, coyotes, bobcats, all legal game.

The Alpine High Drill Squad will sell mums for the Alpine Maria game with orders due by 4 pm Friday. Each mum costs 2 dollars and will be labeled with an A or a number for identification.
