County to buy Marathon home for aid station upgrade
Brewster County Commissioners approved purchasing the Feron Ritchey residence in Marathon for $10,000 to convert it into a combined home and office for a physician to staff the first aid station. Money will come from hospital bonds approved in 1954. The plan aims to locate a doctor in Marathon to run the facility, with free living quarters and office, and bed patients to be taken to the Alpine hospital under construction.

City to eliminate parking on Holland Avenue in Alpine
The City Commission announced that all parking on the south side of Holland Avenue within Alpine city limits will be eliminated within three months following Highway Engineer Charles Holmes' recommendation. Holmes urged eventual widening of Highway 90 to handle growing traffic and forecast a 200 percent rise in traffic within two years, with north side parking also slated for removal and setbacks required for future widening. Additional actions include renewing a gas and oil contract with Bell’s Colden Service, leasing land to the Chamber of Commerce, adjusting Southwestern Bell charges for luxury services, winter watering incentives, and extending street lights with West Texas Utilities cooperation.

Trans-Pecos antelope hunt reports high turnout and kills
Captain Ray Williams of the State Game Dept announced that 832 hunters participated in the Trans-Pecos antelope hunt last week, with 807 antelope killed. Brewster County had 441 hunters and 422 kills, while Presidio and Jeff Davis counties had 391 hunters and 385 kills. The Game Commission also announced special deer and javelina hunts in the Black Gap area next month with 50 buck mule deer and 50 javelina declared fair game. Drawings in Austin determine participants. applications due by 8 am, December 31.

At least 18 Alpine motorists were nabbed in a radar speed up near Pecos on Friday night. They were given until Oct. 16 to answer speeding tickets issued by state highway patrolmen. The stops occurred about four miles south of the Buck-Eagle rame in Pecos.

Vandals puncture Sanderson band bus tires in Alpine
Vandals punched holes in two tires of the Sanderson High School bus that brought the Sanderson Band to Alpine last Saturday. Chief of Police Jack Johnson reported the incident as the band played for the Sam Houston Bearkats against the Sul Ross Lobos at Jackson Field. Tires were repaired quickly, but the vandals have not been caught, Johnson said.
