Thousands of silver dollars pour into Alpine as the community owned clothing factory pays a $1000 weekly payroll. About 29 workers receive wages in silver, with paymasters and city officials participating in staged payments as shipments of finished goods expand to national markets.

Magnolia to Begin Geophysical Survey in Brewster County

Magnolia Petroleum Co. will start geophysical exploration in Brewster County on Friday November 2 with a six car field team of seven men led by G B Davidson. The crew, all married, will be based in Alpine after housing arrangements were made, and their work may last about a year in the Mathon area.

Rifle Shoot For Juniors Stated

The Big Bend Sportsman's Club will sponsor a small bore rifle shooting contest for junior members in November. Open to current juniors and to boys or girls ages 10 to 19 who wish to join. Contests held Saturdays at 3 pm at the club range on Highway 90 west of town starting October 27. Lessons cover safety. no entry fee, only shells and gun. Prizes for scores and medals for various marksmen levels. Non-members may join now for $1 annually by contacting secretary Joe Brady. Game Warden Sanford De Voll will conduct the shooting with an assistant.

Alpine Plymouth dealers Graham Motor Co and LaBert Motor Co will display 1957 Plymouths in Alpine early next week. The show features a newly redesigned exterior, a Fury 301 engine upgrade, and Torsion-Aire ride for the models.

Marathon Road Ceremony Sets Opening of Farm to Market 1214

A ribbon cutting and barbecue mark the opening of Farm to Market 1214 between Marathon and Fort Stockton at 10:30 a.m. Thursday November 8. Attendees include Brewster Pecos county officials Fort Stockton Alpine mayors Big Bend National Park representatives Sul Ross State College band led by Joe Bellamah. The highway opens a new route to the Park with Brewster County paving completed months earlier and the Pecos end finished last week.

Terminal Opening Delayed by Legal Action and Negotiations

River Road Gains Council Backing Across Texas

The International Good Neighbor Council backed River Road from Study Butte in Brewster County to Presidio in Presidio County. A San Antonio meeting Oct. 18 20 urged the State Highway Dept to consider completing the river road project. Supt George W Miller of Big Bend National Park attended. The conference also praised Gov Teofilo Borunda of Chihuahua for supporting the Ojinaga Chihuahua City highway and reaffirmed support for the Rio Grande Peace Park linking the U S Big Bend segment.
