Thousands of silver dollars pour into Alpine as the community owned clothing factory pays a $1000 weekly payroll. About 29 workers receive wages in silver, with paymasters and city officials participating in staged payments as shipments of finished goods expand to national markets.
Miss Jackie Ripley of Alpine and 29 Alpine Garment Factory employees helped show payroll money distribution citywide with flash photography. Gene Hendryx tracked her store to store as she paid bills with silver dollars, while Jim Casner and J D Holman explored new uses for chiuguilla plant for potential Alpine industry. The piece also notes a TV game called Silent TV and includes a retirement note from Attorney General John Shepperd with a front page photo reference.
Magnolia Petroleum Co. will start geophysical exploration in Brewster County on Friday November 2 with a six car field team of seven men led by G B Davidson. The crew, all married, will be based in Alpine after housing arrangements were made, and their work may last about a year in the Mathon area.
The Big Bend Sportsman's Club will sponsor a small bore rifle shooting contest for junior members in November. Open to current juniors and to boys or girls ages 10 to 19 who wish to join. Contests held Saturdays at 3 pm at the club range on Highway 90 west of town starting October 27. Lessons cover safety. no entry fee, only shells and gun. Prizes for scores and medals for various marksmen levels. Non-members may join now for $1 annually by contacting secretary Joe Brady. Game Warden Sanford De Voll will conduct the shooting with an assistant.
Alpine Plymouth dealers Graham Motor Co and LaBert Motor Co will display 1957 Plymouths in Alpine early next week. The show features a newly redesigned exterior, a Fury 301 engine upgrade, and Torsion-Aire ride for the models.
A ribbon cutting and barbecue mark the opening of Farm to Market 1214 between Marathon and Fort Stockton at 10:30 a.m. Thursday November 8. Attendees include Brewster Pecos county officials Fort Stockton Alpine mayors Big Bend National Park representatives Sul Ross State College band led by Joe Bellamah. The highway opens a new route to the Park with Brewster County paving completed months earlier and the Pecos end finished last week.
Brenna Logan has been named drum major of the Alpine Central Centennial Beginners Band. Twirlers are Kay McEntire Donna Lynn Mueller and Candy Weston all from Mrs Akin's fifth grade at Central.
Sul Ross Lobos travel to Seguin to face the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs at Matador Field in a non conference showdown. Texas Lutheran holds the program’s best record in three years while Sul Ross relies on a strong run game led by Sessoms Black and Hensley.
The Alpine Bucks travel to Iraan for a key conference clash with the Braves in a storied rivalry dating to 1935. Alpine lists starters Don Burgess and Baker Turner among others, while Iraan counters with Lindy Lyles and Don Coopland, as both teams seek crucial league points.
Alpine will open Saturday night with the coronation of Miss Janith West as queen and a big Halloween Carnival Monday night. A beef supper precedes the coronation, proceeds fund a new auditorium curtain, while the Carnival features a parade, food, games, and numerous entertainment acts in the High School area.
Alpine Chamber of Commerce manager Levin Davis assumed leadership of the Retail Merchants Association of Alpine, acquiring assets from Oliver Theophilus. The group will operate from the Chamber building with board approval, and Davis will remain CC manager. Charles Lux of Austin will visit to address merchants.
Southern Pacific freight terminal at Alpine faces a delay due to legal action and union negotiations. President D J Russell and a party of SP officials were greeted by Alpine city and county leaders during a brief depot stop on an inspection tour from San Francisco to New Orleans.
The First Baptist Church at Balmorhea was named winner of the District 7 Town and Country Achievement Award sponsored by the Baptist General Convention of Texas. Rev. R. L. Wittner district missions secretary announced the honor.
Mayor Hugh White of Alpine welcomes D. J. Russell of San Francisco president of Southern Pacific on a inspection trip between San Francisco and New Orleans. Russell says legal action and union negotiations delay the opening of the new SP freight terminal here.
The International Good Neighbor Council backed River Road from Study Butte in Brewster County to Presidio in Presidio County. A San Antonio meeting Oct. 18 20 urged the State Highway Dept to consider completing the river road project. Supt George W Miller of Big Bend National Park attended. The conference also praised Gov Teofilo Borunda of Chihuahua for supporting the Ojinaga Chihuahua City highway and reaffirmed support for the Rio Grande Peace Park linking the U S Big Bend segment.
