Federal fishing laws issued by the Interior Department take effect in Big Bend National Park as officials cite unethical practices on the Rio Grande. The rules ban nets trot lines boats and commercial fishing while permitting pole and line fishing with a two hook limit and a daily catch cap of 20 pounds plus one fish.

Former Alpine Resident Dies in California

Word reached here this week of the death of Mrs. Will Stillwell in California. Details were scarce but the body was being sent back for burial. A pioneer resident of Brewster County, she lived at Marathon and Alpine for many years before residing in California where her two daughters live.

Alpine FFA Wins Nation's Top Honor Gold Emblem

Alpine FFA chapter earns Gold Emblem as top nationwide FFA chapter at the National FFA convention in Kansas City. It marks the second straight year and third in Texas with multiple national awards. leaders include John Dow Harris as president and R C Mitchell as adviser. Sgt Stanley Fuiner discharged and staying at Fulcher ranch after serving at Randolph Field.

Alpine PTA Discusses Safety and Recreation at Meeting

The Alpine PTA met Monday afternoon at Central Ward shop. Members viewed a new safety projector and discussed safety zones, child rides, and public awareness. Speakers urged supervision, summer recreation staffing, and funded play areas to reduce hazards and provide safe activities for youths. Nearby guests James Reeves and Capt. W Heard Reeves attended. Reeves is a CBI veteran.

Rev Williams Returns as Alpine Pastor for Another Year

Rev Marvin Williams is reappointed as pastor of the Alpine Methodist Church for another year, announced at the New Mexico conference in El Paso. Other assigned pastors include Rev F R Poage to Lordsburg, Rev Ray McGrew to Fort Stockton, and Rev S M Mims to Marathon and Fort Davis churches.

Alpine Bucks Fall To Clint Lions 19 8 In Season Opener

The inexperienced Alpine high school Bucks lost 19 to 8 to Clint Lions on a windy Saturday night. Clint led 7-0 at first, then 13-0 before Alpine edged closer with a late drive ending in a safety for two points. A large crowd, including airfield servicemen, watched the game. Alpine next hosts Fabens in a rematch after a scoreless earlier meeting.

War Fund Drive Lagging in Brewster County

Walkers Return to Operate Midway Cafe Here

Mr and Mrs Walker who ran the Longhorn cafe at Marta move back to Alp ine to operate the Midway cafe leased from Ed W Nevill. Mr Walker served 27 months in the Army Air Force and they plan to move most Longhorn equipment here and open the Midway soon.

Mrs May Hall Hamilton Dies After Long Illness

Mrs May Hall Hamilton died last Saturday at the home of her daughter Fay Hamilton a Sul Ross librarian after a long illness She had lived in Alpine since her husband Will Hamilton died in 1939 Survivors include Ida Fay Hamilton Alpine step son Godfrey H Hamilton Kirkland two brothers J Thomas Hall Nacogdoches G H Hall Cushing and two sisters Mrs E D Moorer and Mrs T E Strickland both of Nacogdoches Funeral services were held Sunday at Livingston Funeral Home chapel with Sul Ross faculty pallbearers and were followed by burial in Nacogdoches Cemetery

Local Officers Locate Horse and Items Taken This Week

Worth Evans ranch near Ryan to Alpine then Kirbyville Texas. Officers traced horse saddle chaps bridle and other items to Bill McKneely in Kirbyville. State Ranger Joe Bridge Deputy Sheriff Price Rackley aided in locating missing horse and items and requested McKneely be arrested. A witness held as testimony is the man who backed out of the theft.

Antelope Kill Totals Reported in West-of-the-Pecos Hunt

Captain Ray Williams of the State Game department reports about 281 antelopes killed across the West of the Pecos in the second open season in 40 years. The six day period from October 1 to October 9 saw 352 hunters participate, with counts by hunt area totaling 114 in Brewster Jeff Davis, 130 in Presidio, and 37 in Hudspeth Calhoun counties. Hunters and ranches across the region are listed alongside participating counties and outfitters.

Sul Ross Booster Club Launches Fund Drive

A fund drive began after a campus breakfast with 30 attendees as Sul Ross boosters aim to raise at least 8000 locally to aid the athletic program. Twenty five workers will canvass the town and nearby areas while plans to sponsor all games next year in Marfa Pecos and others are discussed.

New Tourist Court Planned on West Main Property

Mr and Mrs W D Measday sold their West Main Avenue home and eight lots to Major Reagan Andy Scurlock who plans to erect a tourist court on the property Scurlock is a Miles resident and Sul Ross College alumnus with Army service since 1941 He was at Hickam Field during Pearl Harbor attack and will be discharged soon work on the tourist court will begin in the near future.

Highland Area Enjoying Fine Fall Weather After Rainfall

The Highland area experiences pleasant fall weather after record October rainfall exceeding five inches. Ranchers report abundant forage growth and hope the warm spell continues to extend range feed, with highs around 82 and traces of rain only twice in the past week.
