In letters from Manila dated Oct 8 and Sept 27 he described survival, injuries, medals including the Purple Heart, and travels through the Philippines and Japan after liberation.
Alpine High meets Fabens Wildcats in a third season game at Jackson Field tonight. The Bucks, many new to football after wartime hiatus, rely on early-season experience from two games. A strong turnout is hoped, recalling prior crowds and community support.
Public Relations at Marta Army Air Field announced the facility will be temporarily inactivated around November 30. A War Department telegram confirmed the action, though rumors of closure had circulated for some time.
About 200 Masons from Alpine Fort Davis Van Horn Sanderson and other area towns attended a bi-district meeting at the Methodist church in Marfa Tuesday evening in honor of Grand Master M. W. Bascom Giles state land commissioner A reception was held in the church basement followed by a Masons only meeting in the church auditorium
The PTA hosts a Hallowe'en carnival next Wednesday on Main Ave between Ath and Sth streets. Parade forms at the courthouse at 4 45 p m led by John Carrico's High School band, then proceeds to Casner Motor Co and Alpine Lumber Co. Activities include chili, pies, bingo, fortune telling, skating to live music, contests, a country store, a fish pond and cake walk with prizes for all ages.
The King and Queen of the Halloween carnival will be crowned Tuesday October 30 at 7 45 p m in the High School auditorium. A Tom Thumb wedding will also be on the program followed by a ball at the Junior-Senior Organization after the coronation. Admission to both events is 30 cents for adults and 15 cents for school children.
Mrs Kate Evans longtime Jeff Davis County pioneer died in El Paso at 4 and funeral services were held in Valentine. She arrived with husband George W Evans Sr in 1884 near Valentine and helped establish the Boys cowboy camp meeting and two similar groups in New Mexico. Survived by nine children 23 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Officiants included Rev King and Rev Marsh. pallbearers were grandsons and a nephew. Interment followed in Valentine beside her husband.
Funeral services for Mrs. Meddie Bennett Stillwell, a pioneer of the county, were held last Thursday at Livingston Funeral Home chapel. She died Oct. 13 at her daughter’s home in El Monte, California. Born June 12, 1876 in Uvalde, she married Will Stillwell in Marathon 19 years ago. Her husband, a former ranchman, was killed in 1918 while with the Texas Ranger force in Mexico. Mrs. Stillwell lived in Tornillo from 1921 to 1929 before moving to California and then to this city with her two daughters Mrs. W. A. Douglas and Mrs. Bernice Stillwell Sanders. She leaves five sisters. Interment followed at Elm Grove cemetery. Pallbearers included Raymond Garnett, J. W. Frazer, Cas Edwards, Joe Hord, Jim Wilson, and Guy Crawford.
Eugene Godsey son of Mr and Mrs J T Godsey former Alpine residents living at Jonahan was killed in a plane crash on Guam this week He attended Alpine schools while his father and older brothers studied at Sul Ross College The report notes his family background and ties to Alpine Texas.
Two Kerrville men L R Dearing and L D Nichols admitted burglaries at Alpine Inn and other Kerrville area sites. They claimed responsibility for several break ins in Boerne and Kerrville, with a cash register found in an Alpine cemetery tank. Police recovered loot and the spree was declared solved.
The Alpine area saw its first winter touch as thermometers fell to an unofficial 30 Monday morning, with the college reporting 32. A heavy frost nipped tender vegetation while the week’s high reached 83 last Friday. A trace of precipitation occurred Wednesday and the official minimum yesterday morning was 38.
The Highland Water Sewage Plumbers Assn formed at a meeting in Marfa last Thursday with Bob Wyatt Alpine City water engineer named president. Other officers elected were J. T. Heath Van Horn vice president and M. W. Finley Marfa secretary treasurer. The next meeting will be at Alpine city hall November 13 at 1 30 p.m. all water and sewage operators employees and plumbers invited.
The Sul Ross Booster club reports progress on the athletic program funding drive launched last Thursday. About 30 workers compiled lists to solicit local firms and individuals. few reports have come in but substantial subscriptions are noted, with cards still outstanding. Respondents are urged to return contributions to J. C. Epperson, G. B. Crawford, or J. L. Ker by, to close the campaign soon.
Srewster county faces a $160,000 quota for the Victory Loan campaign with $60,000 in E bonds and $100,000 in B bonds. G W Baines, county War Finance chairman, notes the county has met head quotas in prior drives and expects no heavy campaigning. The national target for Victory Loan is $11 billion.
AUSTIN Oct. 22 N H Lee of Austin formerly chief engineer was named acting secretarydirector of the state parks board Chairman Raymond L Dillard of Mexia announced last week Lee was appointed after the resignation of Frank D Quinn as secretary director effective Nov 1 at a Denison meeting The board meets in Houston Nov 3 and 4 Dillard said he did not know if a permanent secretary director would be chosen Lee has served in park services since 1993 and was Quinns assistant for three years Under his direction Brownwood and several other state parks were developed
Atha's Drive-in will open within two or three weeks at the old Matthews Cleaners quarters on West Main. Owner W. W Atha says the site will house a convectionary cafe and gas service after extensive remodeling and new fixtures. Atha was general foreman of the fir base shops until recently December 1942.
The Sweet Shop on West Main avenue is sold to A. V. Sport Gunn. Gunn, who ran it before joining the army, will remodel before reopening. The Walker couple operated the shop for about a year. Gunn recently returned from two years of army service and is now employed at Ty Marfa drug store.
