John C. Epperson was elected president of the Sul Ross Booster Club at a college meeting in Alpine. H L Kokernot Jr. became vice president, J L Kerby secretary, and G B Crawford treasurer. The group aims to support athletic programs and strengthen ties among Sul Ross College, Alpine, and Brewster County. Dr. R M Hawkins announced football would return next year and outlined plans for a $4000 gym expansion, two wing additions, and $5000 for a rebuilt football field, with a federal funds request for a new clubhouse. He stressed athletics as vital but not overemphasized and denied any ringers or outlaw play.
Two Latin American boys about 40 years old and small for their age admitted to local officers this week that they committed three burglaries in Alpine during the past ten days. They allegedly entered Smith Furniture Co, Alpine Lbr Co, and Alpine Saddlery and most loot was recovered. They denied involvement in the White Auto Store breakin and the Alpine Inn theft. One alleged break was at the Alpine Saddlery when staff arrived. suspects escaped through a hole in a plate glass window. About $25 was taken from Smith Furniture and from a juke box at the Alpine Inn. The youths were being held for district instructions.
The P T A regular meeting is set for Monday afternoon at 3 45 at the Central ward school replacing the high school auditorium. A program of interest to all patrons will be heard and all members and friends are urged to attend.
Alpine Chamber of Commerce directors outline an ambitious program for Brewster County development. Key committees push airport modernization, paved highway from Alpine to Terlingua, industrial growth, housing to ease shortages, and enhanced recreation. They urge immediate surveys for federal funding and water supply improvements.
Frank D. Quinn, executive secretary of the Texas State Parks board, has tendered his resignation effective November 1 after a long stretch of heavy storms.
The War Chest drive opened in Brewster county Monday with fifteen workers out and reports incomplete. County chairman C. W. Davis said progress was slow. Mrs. Roy Stillwell was named chair for the Marathon area. Quota remains 5260, same as last year, about 600 over-subscribed. Funds needed for relief of destitute residents in war-torn countries.
Harper Sparks has bought the Eagle Pass Guide from the Huffman family after 22 years of ownership. A former Sul Ross student and Del Rio resident, he is the son of Rev and Mrs Buren Sparks, previously city editor of the Evening News and a trainman for the S P railroad since the war. He trained on The Avalanche and is brother to C M Red Sparks of Alpine.
Funeral services were held Thursday at the Alpine Christian church for Mrs Sloan Matthews born Lutitia Frances Basham in Kentucky in 1804. She died the previous Tuesday after an extended illness. She was married Sept 10 1610 in Kentucky and the family moved to the Alpine Marfa area in 1926. Surviving are her husband three sons Basil Matthews Frank Matthews and Tom Matthews two daughters Hazel Matthews and Fern Sandlin two grandchildren Judy Lou Matthews and Sandy Sandlin. Burial followed at Elm Grove cemetery with pallbearers A J Bierschwabe M L Hopson Ford Rackley J C Coleman Fred Williams and Pet Good
Rainfall in the Alpine region since October first tops 4.91 inches with Alpine totals reaching 4.91 inches and a yearly 15.77 inches, amid heavy moisture across the Big Bend and Terlingua area. Roads and a Southern Pacific bridge were washed out and traffic halted as floods persisted into early October. Fort Davis recorded 5.15 inches for the week and Marathon 3.24 inches as other locales saw heavy rains.
Will Slover, 63, of Alpine, died yesterday morning after a prolonged illness. Born January 31, 1882 in Leakey, he lived in Alpine 25 years, 10 with the S P railroad as a car repairman. Funeral at Baptist church with Rev. Wittner. interment Elm Grove. Survived by widow, three sons in Fort Stockton, Sanderson, and Alpine. two stepsons in Sanderson and El Paso. one stepdaughter in Los Angeles. three brothers and three sisters.
