Jim Casner Honored by Texas Tourist Council

Jim Casner will be honored Thursday October 9 by the Texas Tourist Council at a joint Rotary Lions meeting in Alpine. A Distinguished Service Plaque will be presented by Don Epperson at the Highland Restaurant.

Choir School Planned At St James Church

Boys and girls aged 8 to 12 are invited to join a choir school at St James Episcopal Church led by A Thomas Talbert. Training includes keyboard instrument and music reading. Interested youths should meet Talbert at noon October 19 at St James Church. one hour of instruction will be every Sunday from 2 to 3 PM.

Avalanche in Alpine Delivers Late Edition This Week

Our paper will use the Van tiorn Advocate facilities again due to a missing part for our press. Publisher Gene Dow facilitates the arrangement. Delivery of this week’s Avalanche is expected Friday morning. A newer, more efficient press is on order and due within two weeks, to serve Alpine and also the Sanderson Times and the Big Bend Sentinel of Marfa now converting to offset and 5-column width.

Alpine Bucks Host Jal in Final Pre-District Tuneup

Alpine High faces Jal in a Fen district game at Jackson Field for the last tuneup before district 6-AA play next Friday night. Jal lost 41-6 to Pecos last week while Monahans beat Alpine 62-0. Ross Dunn is out for the season with a knee injury. The Buck JV visits Marfa at Buck Stadium for the Class 8 championship at 10 a.m. Head coach Hugo Pena leads the JV with wins over Kalinorhea Van Horn and Monahans.

Governors Preston Smith to Visit Alpine and Marfa Events

Gov. Preston Smith arrives at Alpine Airport on Friday October 17 en route to meet Gov. Oscar Flores of Chihuahua. The leaders will greet residents then tour Sul Ross University before a public barbecue in Ojinaga and an indoor luncheon in Marfa.

New Alpine minister Rev. Arthur A. Hanna named

First Christian Church Alpine hires Rev. Arthur A. Hanna as its new minister. A native of Abilene Texas, he arrives from Big Bend National Park where he led an interdenominational Christian ministry in national parks for over two years. He has also served in Yellowstone Great Smoky Mountains Shenandoah and Everglades National Parks. Hanna holds BA and BD from Texas Christian University and Brite Divinity School and previously served churches in Atoka Oklahoma and San Angelo.

Country Club seeks city aid to maintain golf course

Alpine officials heard Country Club speaker Thomas request city financing to keep the municipal golf course open. He urged adding caretaker Nilo Minjarez to the payroll at 475 dollars monthly for course upkeep. Thomas noted 40 percent of dues fund golf maintenance and seed donations help. The mayor and council will study the issue and reconvene with Thode in October.

Council Seeks to Cut Cost of New City Hall

City Council discussed lowering costs for converting an old bowling alley into a municipal center. The mayor noted Bright Co. reduced its base bid to 64 000 and could work on a cost plus basis with Nesom as superintendent. Officials weighed contractor versus cost plus options and potential equipment savings.

Mrs Collins 93 Dies in Brewster County Texas

Mrs. Lucille Collins a longtime Brewster County resident aged 93 died October 7 at Brewster Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness. She was widow of W W Collins born 1875 in Folian Texas married 1895 in Stephens County. Funeral at 4 p m October 9 Geeslin Chapel with burial Finn Grove Cemetery.
