The Sul Ross Lobos defeated the San Antonio Flyers 18 0 in their season opener at Kelly Field. Pat Hatch led the attack scoring twice while the Flyers’ defense held the first two quarters before Hatch sealed the win in the final minutes. Extra points failed on all attempts. Highland Fair Opens in Marfa with Parade and Exhibits
The fourth annual Highland Fair in Marfa opened with a morning parade and crowds. Bulls and steel calves were sold in the afternoon, with about 1500 Highland Hereford calves penned for sale to buyers nationwide. Alpine Brewster County participants entered poultry and cattle, and exhibits this year are said to be larger than before as visitors view the displays.

Hi School Has Two Holidays
Students in the sub-college department will have two holidays before mid term examinations starting January 21 this year. Superintendent D. M. Major announced the days in response to inquiries. Death Takes Mrs Gossett in New Mexico Saturday
Mrs M H Gossett 68 died unexpectedly Wednesday in Alto New Mexico after leaving Alpine two years ago to live with her daughter Mrs Will Garnett. Born February 19 1863 in Bills county Texas she moved to Alpine in 1911 with her husband and later to Marfa where Mr Gossett died in 1916. She leaves four children and two sisters with funeral plans pending in New Mexico.

West Texas Road Work to Be Awarded by Texas Highway Board
State highway contracts for twenty two Texas counties will be awarded at the Texas Highway Commission meeting October 19 and 20. The tentative $2,000,000 program covers 219 highway miles including 92 miles of grading and drainage and 21 miles of concrete paving along with 106 miles of various hard surface work. Projects include Cu berson 13 miles crushed gravel 21 base from Van Horn east on highway 1 Pecos 11.6 miles caliche base and surface from Brewster line to Terrell line on highway 3 Reagan 118 miles grading and drainage from Big Lake to Irion line on highway 99 Upton 64 miles grading drainage and caliche base from the Lea ne county line to McCamey on highway 197.

Army Band Concert Set for Alpine Auditorium
The U S Army Band, 60 pieces, will perform next Friday night at the Alpine Sul Ross college library building auditorium. The band, just back from Spain, tours 50 U S cities and is praised as premier army musicians. Advance agent will arrive soon to finalize arrangements with Alpine Lions backing the event. Educational admission allows college students with activity fees.

Auxiliary Will Initiate Three New Legion Women
The Women's Auxiliary to the American Legion plans to initiate three new members at the next meeting held at Mrs Arch Allen’s home. They will sell tickets on a quilt by Mrs M A Nix to win the quilt on October 16 when the big army band is to perform in Alpine. The quilt will be displayed in the Gillett Brown window. Proceeds support the auxiliary’s work. Plans to assist programs on November 1 were also discussed.

Alpine junior high football team was shut out 21 to 0 by Fort Davis Wednesday afternoon. Fort Davis scored twice in the first quarter and once more in the second. Davis used older, larger players as Alpine, outweighed, struggled to move the ball.

Alpine Flower Show Entry Wins Prizes in El Paso
Alpine city entries in the El Paso flower show captured several prizes with a tin miniature water tower and tank winning first, marigolds second, and chrysanthemums first. A large ice block plan for a planted dahlia was thwarted when the flower was reportedly stolen from Liberty Hall. The Alpine Water Department hoped for ribbons from the El Paso exhibit as the show opened yesterday and runs through today.

The Sul Lobos head to Abilene for their first conference game with A C C after two non conference tests. The schedule notes the first home conference game against Daniel Baker on October 24. Last year A C C did not appear on the Scarlet and Grey card. A C C beat John Tarleton 13 0 with Goober Keyes in the lead. Tax rolls delayed until after first of next month
Brewster county residents learn that no money can be taken at the tax collector's office until after the first of next month due to state rate delays. Rolls finish and corrections are projected for hex month, while assessors and staff work overtime to prepare for commissioner approval and collections. Poll taxes are due to vote in the 1992 elections by January 31, and Miss Mary Jane Teece of Terlingua becomes the first to qualify by presenting a receipt. Auto tags in Alpine will not go on sale until December 1.

Highway Cops Visit Alpine on License Check
Two state highway patrolmen visited Alpine on a weekday afternoon and inspected drivers for proper licenses and permits. They cited several violators of highway laws on their first pass and warned of strict enforcement on second offenses. Truck drivers delivering paid freight were found to require a chauffeur’s license, and sales of vehicle tags surged the following day per the tax collector’s office.

Authorities report more than a thousand hobos pass Alpine weekly, with four to five officers meeting each train to keep them moving. About half expect the world owes them a living, the rest would work, while 70 to 100 men ride each train. Winter may bring more, challenging officers to maintain orders.

City Tank Forms as 300000 Gallon Reservoir Underway
The city moves ahead on a 300000 gallon reservoir north of the college as concrete pours begin. Engineer H G Olmsted says about thirty men will work in two shifts day and night until completion. Forms for the tank are finished and pipe arrivals ready the hookup to city mains. A large connecting line will link the new well east of town to the tank, with a major extension planned next week.
