Nero the police dog joins Alpine patrols with Herman A. Morgan on the midnight shift. Morgan brought the dog from Houston where he worked as a security officer, noting scent tracking and visible deterrence.
Mrs. Jim Nichols 71 a Brewster County pioneer died after a long illness at Brewster County Memorial Hospital. Funeral was held Oct 12 at First Christian Church with burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. Survivors include daughter Ina Bess James Pecos two sons Vernon Alpine Harold Nichols Victoria and 14 grandchildren.
John Boyd Sr., 89, died at home Tuesday night Oct. 11. Born August 28, 1877 in Choctaw County Mississippi, he worked 35 years for Santa Fe Railroad and retired in 1948. He married Phylena Angelina Johnson May 19, 1915 and was a Methodist. Funeral 4 p.m. today at First Methodist Church with Rev. Edwin Chappell. burial Elm Grove Cemetery. Survived by wife two daughters three sons three brothers and five grandchildren.
Landowners and farm and ranch operators in Zone III of the Big Bend Soil and Water Conservation District unanimously re elected George Mills as district supervisor in last week's election.
Enrollment in Alpine Public Schools rose by 44 pupils this year per Supt. Jack Brock. On Oct. 7, 1966 the count was 1,272 versus 1,228 on the same date in 1965. The update was shared at the regular school board meeting Tuesday night. The board approved a fleet policy covering all school owned vehicles.
Alpine and Crane meet at Jackson Field in Alpine for a key Friday night District 6AA game. Crane aims to rebound with stars Gary Gaines and Darrell Morgeson back, while Alpine adjusts with 328 yard rusher Pete Wylie and QB George Gonzales amid updates on injuries and standings.
A schedule of events leads up to the Alpine-Crane game at Jacksonium tomorrow. Tonight at 7:30 a bonfire at Buck Stadium features special guests and the Buck mascot. Friday includes a 11:50 p.m. pep rally, 3:25 p.m. gym rally, Color Day in purple and gold, a noise maker contest, and a high school dance at the Country Club after the game.

Water system improvements 200 000 and revenue bonds 150 000. sewer system improvements 150 000. municipal swimming pool and recreation area 95 000 tax bonds. Election 8 a m to 7 p m at Chamber of Commerce building. Commerce endorsed Proposition No 3 for the pool and park facilities.
Alpine Chamber of Commerce Manager Phil W Ebensberger writes to The Avalanche urging a new pool and more recreation areas. He commends last week editorial on the Swimming Pool and Parks Bond Issue and argues Alpine lacks park and public swimming facilities for youth and outdoor enjoyment.
City plans a 30 day test of Jim Casner's well near his new plant east of Alpine following a Tuesday City Council meeting. Mayor Lockhart and Councilman McCollister reviewed flow results with a 50 gallon barrel showing 138 gallons per minute. Casner seeks well capacity and potential water negotiations with the City. The AAUW meets October 15 at Kokernot lodge with Myrtle Whiteside in charge on World Affairs.
