Alpine Lions Club hosts a candy sale this Saturday in Alpine to raise funds for Eye sight Conservation. Volunteers in yellow caps will sell candy rolls at the Post Office and local corners, with Dr Tom Coates offering vision checks at Safeway from 1 to 3p m using the club’s screening machine.

Alpine Alumni Association plans the third five year reunion on November 1 in Alpine. The event coincides with Alpine High School Homecoming and Sul Ross State College Homecoming. Registration starts 4 p.m. in Alpine Central School Cafeteria. tea and coffee will be served.

Tests Set For 53 Alpine Juniors This Tuesday

A preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test will be given to 53 junior students on Tuesday October 15. The test, a junior level form of the College Entrance Examination Board, helps students compare results with peers from colleges they may attend and aids in making suitable college choices. Alpine High School Guidance Department, led by Mrs Jo Ann Ford, administers and interprets the tests.

Bids Called On Hospital Addition in Brewster County

County seeks bids for a 20000 dollar addition to Brewster County Memorial Hospital to add 15 beds, enlarged operating room, solarium, remodeled lobby, and expanded parking. Work due within 180 days, funded by county funds with federal match. old tennis court to be abandoned.

Big Bend Soil District to Elect Zone V Supervisor

On October 14 landowners with agricultural property east of Highway 227 and Big Bend National Park will elect a supervisor for Zone V of the Big Bend Soil Conservation District. Incumbent C. F. Cox seeks re election. The poll opens at 9 a m and closes at noon at Tom Leary's Ranch in Marathon with Billy G. Hill as chairman and Tom Leary serving as secretary. Both ranchers and their wives may vote.

Legion Meeting Draws 200 Plus Delegates in Alpine

More than 200 expected as the American Legion and Auxiliary hold district fair convention in Alpine. Sessions run Saturday and Sunday at the Legion Club and Community Center with registration opening at 9 30 a m. A luncheon honors guests, a 1 p m district meeting, and youth focused panels precede a Saturday evening dance hosted by local Legion and Auxiliary members. Sunday features a joint session at the High School Auditorium with welcomes, keynote speakers Miss Margaret Morrow and Jack W Hanks Jr, and a memorial service for State Rep Gene Hendryx followed by a barbecue at 12 noon.

SPix Freight Derailment Near Alpine Causes No Injuries

Nineteen cars of a 53 car Southern Pacific freight train derailed about 1.5 miles west of Alpine just after noon Saturday. Seventeen cars were demolished while two could be moved onto racks. The east bound train carried copper and the cause was a bumped off journal cited by Pacific authorities. By 2 a.m. Sunday traffic resumed on a track rebuilt around 300 feet of damaged line.

District 7AA UIL set dates for spring events

Supt Frost Principal Worley and Coach Boyd attended the District 7AA UIL meeting in McCamey to confirm spring dates. The schedule includes UIL literary meet April 11 at McCamey, One act April 2 at Sonora, Track April 7 at Crane, Volleyball March 19-20 at Stanton, Tennis April 10-11 at McCamey, Golf April 9 at Alpine. George Grounds elected director general of the UIL program and Crane coach Don Anderegg to direct track and field.

Sul Ross to Host Open House for New Computer Center

Sul Ross State College plans an open house for the new Computer Center at 7 p m on Tuesday in the Administration Building first floor. More than 300 invitations target bankers superintendents principals and college presidents from the Trans Pecos region. Dr Bryan Wildenthal will host with tours demos of business and mathematical applications and town nights coordinated by chambers of commerce and service clubs.
