The Texas Highway Commission approves 93 400 dollars for Brewster County and 23 200 dollars for Jeff Davis County for highway safety and improvements in 1961. About 58.5 miles in Brewster and 15.3 in Jeff Davis will be supervised by H L Suratt. Rain record set as Alpine marks September downpour
Alpine September rainfall totaled 4.39 inches, the best month since 1946, boosting the year to 14.87 inches. Four days produced most of the rain, with 1.11 inches on the first, 1.38 on the fifth, 1.46 on the 15th, and 0.95 on the 16th. The Big Bend-Davis Mountains area remains in good condition.

Eight West Texas high school bands will participate in Band Day events at Sul Ross State College in Alpine on Saturday. The parade along Holland Avenue starts at 4 p.m. with the Sul Ross Lobo band leading. Afterward, majorette and cheerleader workshops occur on campus, and bands perform at Jackson Field for the Lobos vs. Southwest Texas game at 7 p.m. McCamey will present the pre game show, with Mona than s and Marfa providing the halftime.
