Screwworm Meeting Set Friday in Alpine

Alpine hosts a Friday meeting at Sul Ross College to discuss the screwworm situation and future eradication plans. Speakers include Dr. Garrett Dr. Wilbur Dolph Briscoe Jr and others. The Highland Hereford Association sponsors and local producers are urged to attend.

Highway Projects Approved In Brewster And Jeff Davis

The Texas Highway Commission approves 93 400 dollars for Brewster County and 23 200 dollars for Jeff Davis County for highway safety and improvements in 1961. About 58.5 miles in Brewster and 15.3 in Jeff Davis will be supervised by H L Suratt. Plans include U S 90 segments from Alpine to Pecos County line and U S 67 to Pecos County line plus asphalt coats on State 118 and park roads in Jeff Davis County.

Rain record set as Alpine marks September downpour

Alpine September rainfall totaled 4.39 inches, the best month since 1946, boosting the year to 14.87 inches. Four days produced most of the rain, with 1.11 inches on the first, 1.38 on the fifth, 1.46 on the 15th, and 0.95 on the 16th. The Big Bend-Davis Mountains area remains in good condition.

Players To Present Foolish Notion by Big Bend Players

The Big Bend Players announce the fall season led by chairwoman Mrs. J P Blumenfeld. On October 21 and 22 at Alpine Community Center they stage Phillip Barry’s Foolish Notion directed by Dr Katharine Boyd from Sul Ros College. West Texas Bands to Join Sul Ross Band Day in Alpine

Eight West Texas high school bands will participate in Band Day events at Sul Ross State College in Alpine on Saturday. The parade along Holland Avenue starts at 4 p.m. with the Sul Ross Lobo band leading. Afterward, majorette and cheerleader workshops occur on campus, and bands perform at Jackson Field for the Lobos vs. Southwest Texas game at 7 p.m. McCamey will present the pre game show, with Mona than s and Marfa providing the halftime.

Youthful Lobos to Face SW State Here Saturday

Sul Ross State College’s youthful Lobos, expected to finish last in the Lone Star Conference, open league play against Southwest Texas State College Bobcats at Jackson Field. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. SWT’s Rex Turner and SWT’s Ronnie Stephens pace the stout offenses as SWT seeks a 2-0 start. The Lobos rely on four freshmen starters and aim to rebound after a 47-6 loss to Western New Mexico.

Alpine Buck Boosters Club launches three football season projects at Alpine High School. They film each game, rewire the scoreboard costing about 175 dollars, and build a camera booth atop Buck Stadium press box. Meetings Mondays at 7 p.m. in the high school library.
