Expedition Through Davis Mountains 1849 Encounter with Apaches
Maj. Gen. Worth orders Lts. Whiting and Smith to survey a route from San Antonio to El Paso. On March 17 1849 the party passes into Davis Mountains foothills and is attacked by Apache bands. After tense parley with Gomez and other chiefs, the Americans secure safe passage and approach springs where fortifications would later rise.
